Royal was born September 23, 1930, to parents Fred and Anna (Goetsch) Reid, in Brewster, KS. He was the third of five sons, which also included, Warren, Delmar, J., and Jarrell. Royal was married to Joan Y. (Leonhart) Reid for 53 years.
Royal graduated from Brewster High School in 1948 and attended Kansas State University, graduating in 1955 with a Business Administration degree, with a major in Accounting. He was a longtime member of Rotary, Kiwanis, Elks Club, and served on the Goodland City Council.
