EMPORIA – The Hays Eagles Senior American Legion baseball team was shutout for the first time Sunday afternoon, losing 3-0 to the Emporia Post 5 Seniors in the title game of the Sam Ellis Classic at Sodens Grove in Emporia.

The Eagles (8-3) were held to a pair of singles from Cody Petersen and Dominic Bainter and had only five total base runners with none moving past first.

Emporia scored a run in the third and two in the fourth to go 6-0 on the weekend.

Trey Riggs (2-1) pitched three innings and took the loss after allowing one run on three hits with four strikeouts and a walk. Colby Dreiling pitched the final four frames and gave up two runs on six hits with a couple of walks and no strikeouts.

Earlier in the day, the Eagles scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth to erase a 5-0 deficit and beat the Wichita Aviators 7-5 in the semifinals.

Cody Petersen started the comeback with a double in the fourth that scored Palmer Hutchison. Trey Riggs drew a bases loaded walk to start the scoring in the fifth. Petersen closed the gap to 5-4 with a two-run single. Jamison Martin reached on an error with the bases loaded which scored Riggs to tie the game 5-5. Brock Lummus scored what proved to be the game-winning run on a throwing error by the catcher.

Riggs pitched three shutout innings of relief for the win after starter Palmer Hutchison allowed five unearned runs on three hits with seven strikeout and five walks over the first four innings

Petersen went 3-for-3 and drove in three runs.

The Eagles play their first home games of the season Wednesday when they host Buhler in a 5 p.m. doubleheader Wednesday at Larks Park.
