Rosetta White

Rosetta White was born Rosetta Pauline Sayers to Mary Jane Sayers Clark on May 4, 1939 in Nicodemus, Kansas. The Sayers family was one of the 5 founding families of Nicodemus- a black pioneer town established by freed slaves after the Civil War.

Rosetta, along with her younger siblings James Sayers, Edwin Matthews, and Mary Alice Ingram, grew up with their maternal grandparents Calvin and Josephine Sayers.

In 1952, the family moved to Dayton, Ohio, where Rosetta met Joe White, Sr. Joe was immediately captivated by Rosetta. Rosetta however, was not aware. The two reconnected a few years later, their love grew, and they were married in 1956. Joe and Rosetta welcomed 6 children into their family: Joanne, Joe Jr, Denise, Duane, Jerome, and Shirlene.

The family lived in Dayton for a few years and then moved cross country to Los Angeles, California. After divorcing in 1964, Rosetta & her 6 children continued to live in Los Angeles and eventually settled in San Bernardino, California in 1969. In San Bernardino, Rosetta worked as a Micro Film Operator while she raised her 6 children.

Whenever she could, Rosetta would travel back to Nicodemus for the annual Homecoming Celebration in late July. During one of these trips, Rosetta met Steve Powell. In 1984, the two welcomed their son, Steven Powell, Jr into the world.

During her time in San Bernardino, Rosetta was blessed to be around many of her grandchildren. In fact, she played a large role in caring for & raising many of them.

Always longing to return to life in Kansas and wanting be closer to her aging mother, Rosetta, along with her son Steven & young grandson Joseph White (whom she legally adopted as her own), moved to Stockton, Kansas in 1993. In Kansas, Rosetta worked as a Nursing Assistant while raising the two boys.

As time progressed, Rosetta eventually moved in with Steven and his family, who cared for her needs. In April 2019, Rosetta suffered a massive brain hemorrhage. She fell asleep in death on August 12, 2019 at 80 years old. She was preceded in death by her brother James Sayers (1987), Daughter Joanne Jordan (2013), Son Duane White (2014), Mother Mary Jane Sayers Clark (2014), and ex-husband Joe White Sr. (2007).

Rosetta is survived by her 5 children: Joe White Jr, Denise Perkins, Jerome White, Shirlene Payne, Steven Powell, Jr, adopted son Joseph White; siblings Mary Alice Ingram, Edwin Matthews; 50 Grandchildren; over 60 Great Grandchildren and Great- Great Grandchildren.

Rosetta was always interested in the lives of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. We look forward to talking with her again once she awakens from death.

Delton named a starter at TCU

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) – Graduate transfer Alex Delton will be the starting quarterback for TCU’s season opener, and true freshman Max Duggan will also play in the first quarter against Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Saturday.

Coach Gary Patterson said Tuesday the competition was good and that “a lot of guys keep pushing.”

Patterson also said senior running back Sewo Olonilua won’t play in the first half Saturday. Olonilua, who set a school bowl record with 194 yards rushing in the Cheez-It Bowl, was arrested in May on possible drug charges in Walker County, Texas.

Delton, from Hays, got the starting edge at quarterback because of experience. He played 14 games with six starts the last two seasons at Kansas State, and was a team captain last year.

Former Penn transfer Michael Collins started four games late last season for TCU before a right ankle injury that forced him to miss all of spring drills, then missed about two weeks of practice this month because of a foot injury.

Campgrounds closed at Wilson Lake, fireworks show still planned for Saturday

By JAMES BELL
Hays Post

The Army Corps of Engineers announced Tuesday the closure of sections of the Minooka Campsite at Wilson Lake due to anticipated flooding with water covering many sites that had recently been reopened from flooding in May.

“Never expected flood closures in August but Kansas is what it is,” the corps announced on Facebook Tuesday afternoon.

“Much of north-central Kansas received heavy precipitation amounts last weekend with some reports in the five to six inch range,” they said. “Our office has recorded 9.9 inches for August.”

Lake elevation Monday was recorded at 1520.91 according to the United State Geological Survey.

All of section F of the Minooka Campsite, along with portions of section D and B are closed as water is creeping higher at the lake.

Reservations at those sites have been canceled and full refunds are being issued.

“Forecasting the lake elevation crest is not an exact science, but preliminary estimates show concern for public flood impacts during the upcoming Labor Day Weekend,” the corps said. “We have come up almost two feet with another two to three feet expected. Many of the campsites that were just repaired and opened on the 23rd are now going under again.”

The west and east boat ramps are closed along with the spillway boat ramp. The middle ramp is open, but the dock is inaccessible.

The fireworks show that was rescheduled after flooding during the Fourth of July holiday weekend is still planned for Aug. 31, at 8:45 p.m. according to the Wison Lake Area Association.

Butt could be headed to injured reserve again

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) – Jake Butt has had another setback in his return from a third ACL injury and might be headed back to injured reserve.

Butt played 11 snaps in Denver’s preseason loss to the Los Angeles Rams last weekend in his first game action since last September, and he caught a pair of passes.

He hasn’t practiced since then, however, because of pain and swelling in his surgically repaired left knee, symptoms that also sidelined him for three weeks earlier this summer.

Butt “may miss some time,” coach Vic Fangio said Tuesday. “His knee, when he starts to feel good and plays or practices, then it flares back up again.”

Fangio said IR is a possibility for Butt but not a certainty.

Injuries to Butt and four other offensive players are complicating the Broncos’ 53-man roster decisions. Also injured are QB Drew Lock (thumb), right guard Ronald Leary (knee), receiving back Theo Riddick (shoulder), and fullback Andy Janovich (chest).
