Trial set to begin in Kansas abortion stalking lawsuit

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — A federal jury will decide whether the operator of a Wichita abortion facility had reasonable grounds to seek a protection-from-stalking order against an abortion protester.

Jury selection begins Monday in the federal lawsuit filed by anti-abortion activist Mark Holick against clinic operator Julie Burkhart.

The lawsuit stems from anti-abortion protests in 2012 and 2013 in front of Burkhart’s home and in her neighborhood. She subsequently got a temporary protection-from-stalking order against him that was dismissed two years later.

U.S. District Judge John Broomes has already thrown out some of the lawsuit’s claims, but left it to a jury to decide whether the facts constituted malicious prosecution.

Broncos blow lead, fall to 0-4 with loss to Jaguars

DENVER (AP) — Leonard Fournette ran for a career-high 225 yards and Josh Lambo kicked a 33-yard field goal as time expired, sending the Jacksonville Jaguars past the winless Denver Broncos 26-24 Sunday.

The Broncos (0-4) not only were victimized by a last-second field goal for the second time this season, but they blew a 14-point lead at home in a loss for the first time since 2006.

Gardner Minshew II drove the Jaguars, one of four AFC South teams who are 2-2, into field goal range after Joe Flacco’s 8-yard TD throw to Courtland Sutton with 1:38 left gave Denver a 24-23 lead.

Eerily reminiscent of their 16-14 loss to the Bears in Denver two weeks ago, the Broncos helped ignite the winning drive by getting whistled for roughing the passer.

Against Chicago, it was Bradley Chubb’s questionable penalty, which the league admitted was a bad call. Against the Jaguars, it was a flag by Von Miller, who reached up and struck Minshew in his neck just as he released his pass in a chaotic pocket.

Miller’s foul spoiled his big day in which he collected his 99th and 100th career sacks and drew several holding penalties, one of which wiped a Jaguars touchdown off the board.

The 15-yard flag on a 1-yard throw on second down gave Jacksonville a first-and-10 at its 41.

Fournette topped his previous career high of 181 yards on Oct. 8, 2017, at Pittsburgh, and his big run Sunday was an 81-yarder that set up Jacksonville’s go-ahead score.

The Broncos finally ended their sack drought, dropping Minshew five times, but suddenly they couldn’t stop the run.

The result was their first home loss in which they led by 14 or more points since Nov. 19, 2006, when they were beaten by the Chargers 35-27 after jumping out to a 24-7 lead.

Jacksonville hadn’t had a 100-yard rusher in 22 games, the second-longest streak in the NFL behind Philadelphia’s 32-game drought.

The Jaguars also recorded their first takeaway of the season despite missing star cornerback Jalen Ramsey, who was deactivated and missed a game for the first time in his four-year NFL career. He missed practice all week, first with an illness, then a back injury and finally for paternity leave.

Denver led 17-6 and was driving for another score just before halftime when safety Ronnie Harrison intercepted Flacco, who airmailed a pass to Emmanuel Sanders. That set up Lambo’s second field goal, cutting Jacksonville’s deficit to 17-6 at the half.

Coming out of the break, the Jaguars employed a heavy front with 308-pounder Cedric Ogbuehi serving as an eligible receiver and extra blocker for Fournette.

The Jaguars went on a 75-yard, 16-play opening drive that ate up nearly 10½ minutes, which Minshew capped with a 7-yard TD toss to running back Ryquell Armstead after slipping two potential sacks and with Derek Wolfe and Miller bearing down on him.

After Denver went three-and-out, Fournette reeled off his 81-yard run, setting up tight end James O’Shaughnessy’s 18-yard TD grab that put the Jaguars ahead 20-17.

The Jaguars ate up another seven minutes in going 78 yards in 13 plays to push their lead to 23-17 on Lambo’s 34-yarder with 2:54 left.

Rookie tight end Noah Fant scored his first career TD on a 25-yard catch-and-run dumpoff from Flacco, who also hit Sutton for a first-half TD.

INJURIES:

Broncos ILB Josey Jewell aggravated a hamstring injury in the second quarter and was done for the day.

Kansas man used phone to record victims to produce child porn

WICHITA, KAN. – A Kansas man was sentenced Thursday to 27 years in Federal prison for using his pone to produce child pornography, according to U.S. Attorney Stephen McAllister.

Michael Paul Murphy, 41, Pittsburg, Kan., pleaded guilty to two counts of producing child pornography.

In his plea, Murphy admitted using an iPhone to surreptitiously record minor victims in various stages of undress. He edited the recordings to focus on the victims’ genitals. He emailed the images to his workplace.

 

Great Bend woman hospitalized after 2-vehicle crash

PAWNEE COUNTY — Two people were injured in an accident just before 2:30p.m. Sunday in Pawnee County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 1997 Honda Accord driven by Gerardo M. Lara, 49, Amarillo, was northbound on U.S. 183 five miles east of Rozel.

The driver disobeyed a stop sign at the Kansas 156 Junction and collided with a westbound 2002 Chevy Impala driven by Kaci N. Jordan, 36, Great Bend.

The Chevy rolled multiple times before coming to rest on its roof facing north. EMS transported Jordan and Lara to the hospital in Larned. Both drivers were properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the KHP.

Police: Kan. man remains hospitalized after weekend stabbing

SEDGWICK COUNTY Law enforcement authorities are investigating a stabbing that sent a man to the hospital.

Just after 11 a.m. Saturday, police  were dispatched to a stabbing call in the 500 block of N. West Street in Wichita, according to officer Kevin Wheeler.

Upon arrival they located a 38-year-old man with a stab wound to his abdomen. He was taken to a local hospital where he remains hospitalized.

The preliminary investigation shows that the victim was in a verbal and physical disturbance with another man. During the disturbance, he was stabbed once. Police detained two individuals near the scene. One woman was interviewed and then released. A 38-year-old male was booked on outstanding warrants.

There is no threat to the community, according to Wheeler. Police have not reported an arrest in connection with the stabbing.

 

Soler hits 48th HR, Royals beat Twins in Yost’s last game

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Jorge Soler locked up the AL home run crown with his 48th homer, Brett Phillips drove a game-ending sacrifice fly in the ninth inning and the Kansas City Royals beat the Minnesota Twins 5-4 Sunday in manager Ned Yost’s final game.

Phillips’ first career walk-off RBI gave Yost a celebratory send-off on the final day of the regular season. Yost finished 746-839 over 10 seasons leading Kansas City, by far the most wins in franchise history.

Twins manager Rocco Baldelli turned over coaching duties to infielder Ehire Adrianza because he thinks he has the makings of a future manager. Adrianza filled out the lineup card and called the shots during the game. Minnesota finished the season 101-61, one victory shy of the franchise record set in 1965.

Soler connected in the first inning and broke a tie with Rafael Palmeiro for most home runs in a season by a Cuban-born player. The 27-year-old Soler’s previous career high was 12.

Ian Kennedy (3-2) pitched a scoreless ninth before the Royals rallied against rookie Brusdar Graterol (1-1). Humberto Arteaga led off with a double, and Nick Dini moved him to third with a bloop single, setting up Phillips’ fly to right that lifted the Royals to 59-103.

Kansas City’s Hunter Dozier led off the eighth with his 10th triple of the season, matching teammates Whit Merrifield and Adalberto Mondesi for the AL lead. It marks the first time since 1984 (Astros) that a team has had three players with at least 10 triples. Dozier scored on Ryan O’Hearn’s tying double.

The AL Central-winning Twins scored three runs in the first on back-to-back home runs by C.J. Cron —a two-run shot — and Jake Cave. It’s the 12th time this season the Twins have homered back-to-back. Jason Castro added a solo shot in the fifth.

The Royals drew 17,875 in their final game. They finished with an average of 18,267 fans, 2,290 fewer than 2018.

TRAINER’S ROOM

Twins Minnesota is uncertain if rookie 3B Luis Arraez will be ready for the AL Division Series after spraining his right ankle Saturday. “It could be a few days, it could be a week,” said head athletic trainer Tony Leo. “We’re not really putting a timeline on this one, obviously, with where we are.” Arraez is hitting .334 in 92 games.

The Twins will have a few days off before opening their ALDS in New York on Friday. Baldelli has not named any starters for the ALDS.

New ‘inclusive’ plaque approved for Kansas Capitol

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — A state committee has agreed to replace a plaque commemorating the completion of the Kansas Capitol renovation that named only former Gov. Sam Brownback with a plaque bearing the names of four governors involved in the project.

The original plaque was installed during a dedication ceremony in 2014 after the $325 million project was completed.

The renovation project began in 1999 and ended in 2014, when Brownback was governor.

The new privately-financed plaque approved by the Capitol Preservation Committee will include the names of Govs. Bill Graves, Kathleen Sebelius, Mark Parkinson and Brownback. It also names the contractor, architects and the former director of legislative administrative services.

Senate Majority Leader Anthony Hensley, a Topeka Democrat, said he pushed for the new plaque because the original was not inclusive.

Chiefs score late, stay undefeated with win over Lions

DETROIT (AP) — Darrel Williams ran for a go-ahead, 1-yard touchdown with 23 seconds left for his second score in the fourth quarter, lifting the Kansas City Chiefs to a 34-30 win over the Detroit Lions.

Detroit drove to the Kansas City 44 on the final drive and Matthew Stafford heaved two passes toward the end zone that were incomplete, ending the game.

The Chiefs (4-0) went ahead for the first time Sunday early in the third quarter when Bashaud Breeland recovered Kerryon Johnson’s fumble and returned it 100 yards, taking advantage of everyone on the field appearing to stop momentarily and the officials not blowing a whistle. The pivotal play stood after review.

The Lions (2-1-1) scored the first 10 points and, after Kansas City pulled into two ties, went back ahead late in the second, third and fourth quarters.

Stafford threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Kenny Golladay with 2:26 left to give Detroit a 30-27 lead. The call on the field stood after a review, which showed Golladay got both feet in the end zone. Golladay had a touchdown overturned by review early in the third because he appeared to lose control of the football as he hit the turf.

Kansas City started the winning drive on its 21. Patrick Mahomes converted a fourth-and-8 from his 34 with a 15-yard run to help him finish with a career-high 56 yards rushing and he completed just enough passes to set up Williams for a short run to take the lead for good.

Mahomes was 24 of 42 for 315 yards. The reigning MVP had thrown at least two touchdown passes in 14 straight games, one short of the NFL record set by Peyton Manning.

Stafford was 21 of 34 for 291 yards with three touchdowns, including two to Golladay and one to T.J. Hockenson. Stafford’s second touchdown pass of the game — and first to Golladay — put Detroit up 23-20 and followed a fifth fumble in the third quarter. Johnson had 125 yards rushing on 26 carries.

INJURIES

Chiefs: DE Alex Okafor (hip) and LB Damien Wilson (concussion) left in the fourth quarter.

Lions: Hockenson (concussion) was carted off the field in the third quarter and S Quandre Diggs (hamstring) left in the first quarter.

Tiger women’s soccer comes up short against Hornets

HAYS, Kan. – The FHSU women’s soccer team faced adversity Sunday with tough weather conditions in the form of a strong steady wind gusting up to 40 mph at times. Falling down two goals to a solid Emporia State team did not help as ESU held on for a 2-1 win in the MIAA opener for both squads. The Tigers dropped to 4-3 (0-1) and the Hornets improved to 6-2 (1-0).

The Hornets got on the board fast in the first half going into the strong wind. Emporia State’s MacKenzie Dimarco sneaked one by goalkeeper Megan Kneefel, threading the needle low and to the left after a pass from Gaby Crowell. That put the Tigers down 1-0 entering halftime.

The score remained the same until the 72nd minute when ESU’s Tanna Benefiel headed a shot in the net off a corner from Joanie Westcoat. ESU looked comfortable with a 2-0 lead until a late push from the Tigers.

The Tigers closed the gap in the 86th minute to make the game interesting. Kailey Corr fouled Emily Reitz in the box and FHSU was awarded a penalty kick. Darby Hirsch stepped up and knocked in her third goal of the season. The Tigers mounted a couple more attacks, but ultimately could not find the equalizer.

FHSU tallied five shots throughout the match, taken by Cailey Perkins, Zariah Smith, Jenna Prince, and Darby Hirsch (2). Emporia State reached 11 shots overall with seven taken by Mackenzie Dimarco.

Megan Kneefel (3-2) saved five of seven Emporia State shots on goal. Jillian Patton (6-2) saved two of three FHSU shots on goal.

The Tigers travel to Edmond, Okla. looking for their first MIAA win against Central Oklahoma. The match is set for 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 4.

Police: Woman shot in the head at Kansas home

SHAWNEE COUNTY— Law enforcement authorities are investigating a shooting that sent a woman to the hospital.

Late Friday night police were called to the 1200 block of SW Chatham Place in Topeka for a report of a disturbance, according to Lt. Aaron Jones. Officers learned that a disturbance was heard followed by a single gunshot.

At the residence, police located a woman with an apparent gunshot wound to the head.  Police also located a man in the vicinity. He attempted to run from officers, but was quickly apprehended, according to Jones.

The woman was treated and released from a local hospital.  Police have not reported an arrest or released the victim’s name.

USGS: Series of earthquakes reported in north-central Kansas

JEWELL COUNTY — A series of earthquakes shook north central Kansas over the past 24-hours.

The ten quakes measured from a magnitude 2.1 to 3.5, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The first just after 6:45p.m. measured 3.3 and was centered just east of Randall, Kansas. The strongest of the quakes measured 3.5 and was centered in the same area.

There are no reports of damage or injury, according to the Jewell County Sheriff’s office.

 

 

 

Pro racer killed in Kansas street drags competition

MONTGOMERY COUNTY —One person died in an accident just after 4p.m. Saturday during the street drag races at the Coffeyville Industrial Park.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2000 Pontiac Firebird 2-door driven by Joseph K. Hunt, 27, Carter Lake, ID., and a 1980 Ford truck driven by Jason L. Maxey, 43, Carthage, Mo., were westbound on B Street.

Hunt lost control of the Pontiac. It struck the driver’s side of the Ford, entered the north ditch and collided with a sewage drain pipe.

The Ford entered the north ditch and came to rest in the grass. Hunt was pronounced dead at the scene. Maxey was not injured.
