Tips help police arrest Kan. felon wanted for stabbing woman

SEDGWICK COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities continue to investigate a September 23, stabbing in Wichita that left a 28-year-old woman in critical condition and have made an arrest.

Following a release of home security camera video and a photo of the suspect’s shirt, police received enough information from citizens to arrest 30-year-old Wade Dunn on requested charges of attempted first degree murder, criminal possession of a weapon and a federal warrant from the U.S. Marshal’s office, according to Police Chief Gordon Ramsay.

Police arrested him early Saturday without incident.

Dunn is a convicted felon and has previous convictions for Criminal threat, theft and burglary, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.

The victim remains hospitalized in the intensive care unit but has been able to talk to investigators, according to Ramsay. There is no connection between the victim and the suspect.

Ramsay thanked citizens for their tips in helping them make the arrest.

Duggan leads TCU to easy win over Kansas

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Freshman Max Duggan led touchdown drives on all three of his first-half possessions as TCU scored on every possession before halftime Saturday and was never threatened in a 51-14 victory over Kansas to open Big 12 play.

TCU (3-1, 1-0) dominated in every area of the first half against Kansas (2-3, 0-2), which ended a 48-game road losing streak to Power 5 opponents earlier this season at Boston College.

TCU was locked in from the opening kickoff, coming off a home loss to rival SMU a week ago that knocked the Horned Frogs out of the Top 25. The Horned Frogs had some extra motivation as well after losing last year at Kansas.

“Everybody was practicing hard this week,” TCU cornerback Jeff Gladney said, “and you could tell.”

Duggan started for a second straight game but was replaced midway through the second quarter by graduate transfer Alex Delton with the Horned Frogs in full control at 28-0. Delton, who played last year at Kansas State, led TCU on two scoring drives to end the first half for a 38-0 lead.

Duggan, who played all but one snap a week ago against SMU after sharing time the first two weeks, was in for the first two second-half drives before giving way to Delton.

Delton led his first touchdown drive of the season in the second quarter and finished 10-for-15 passing for 186 yards.

TCU coach Gary Patterson said he thought Delton looked more comfortable than Duggan. Patterson said he was pleased that his young team played well before halftime considering the morning kickoff.

“Good first half; I wasn’t particularly very happy with the second one,” Patterson said. “You want to be a great football team you have to finish.”

The Horned Frogs’ defense never gave Kansas a chance to get going. Kansas finished with only 159 yards on 47 plays and was 1 for 11 on third-down attempts. The Jayhawks had only 55 yards on 34 plays heading into the fourth quarter.

Kansas lost its 46th consecutive Big 12 road game. The Jayhawks’ last Big 12 road win came Oct. 4, 2008 at Iowa State.

TCU leading receiver Jalen Reagor ended the first quarter with a 73-yard punt return for a touchdown after he initially muffed the football, giving the Horned Frogs’ a 21-0 lead.

Darius Anderson had a third consecutive 100-yard rushing game for the Frogs, finishing with 115 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries.

TCU third-string quarterback Mike Collins played the last possession and scored on an 11-yard touchdown run with no time left after hurrying to get the snap off before the clock hit zero.

A few plays before the Collins’ score, Kansas coach Les Miles called his last timeout on third down with the game out of reach.

“It was still a run play,” Patterson said of the meaningless touchdown. “You guys know how I am, I took knees the last time I played here. I’m not one of those guys who runs it up.”

THE TAKEAWAY

Kansas: The Jayhawks were overmatched in every phase and didn’t show much fight after a dismal first quarter. Quarterback Carter Stanley struggled with his accuracy, finishing 12-for-29 passing for only 84 yards.

TCU: Patterson must have gotten the Horned Frogs’ attention in practice this week. TCU converted all 10 of its third-down attempts in the first half. TCU made it look easy all day despite missing four receivers with injuries and starting third-string cornerback Keenan Reed.

No. 22 FHSU men’s soccer scores eight in rout of Harding

SEARCY, Ark. – Following an offensively dominant performance against Ouachita Baptist on Thursday that resulted in a draw, No. 22 Fort Hays State men’s soccer was back in the scoresheet early on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers defeated Harding 8-1 to snatch their fourth win of the season.

With the victory, FHSU remains undefeated all-time against Harding, moving the record to 7-0.

The 2018 National Semifinalists struck early against the Bisons. In the fourth minute, midfielder Moritz Walther began the scoring on an assist from Agustin Meza – creating the first goal of the season for Walther.

Just seven minutes later, Moises Peralta followed up Walther, with an assist from Alec Bevis.

Nearly midway through the first half, Tigers leading goal scorer Santiago Agudelo added another to the scoreboard, notching his fifth of the season. Sophomore midfielder,Rogelio Lopez was awarded his third assist on the season during the play.

Four minutes later, Fort Hays added another score only this time, it was Lopez finishing a pass from Agudelo. On an ensuing FHSU possession, the black and gold once again found the back of the net for their fourth goal of the game. Lopez, once again a facilitator on the play, found Sergio Villalba, who finished his chance past goalkeeper Carlos Calderon.

Heading into the halftime break, the Tigers commanded a 5-0 lead over the Bisons and would continue to pour in the goals as the second period kicked off.

Villalba, scoring in the 31st minute, notched another goal in the 56th minute for his second goal of the game, the Tigers sixth.

Just a minute later, Harding. Was able to add a tally to their own side of the scoresheet. Fort Hays State defender Miguel Baca committed a foul within the confines of the 18-yard box and was handed a yellow card. The Bison’s Christian Ramos stepped up to take the penalty kick and successfully found the back of the net.

Before long, FHSU piled on their seventh goal of the game when Alonso Rodriguez played a ball through the middle of the field to Agudelo, cutting to the left corner of the 18-yard box. The senior striker cut in on his right foot and displayed a curving finish between two Bison defenders.

The next Tiger point occurred under five minutes later. In the 80th minute, junior Mauricio Etcheverry was substituted into the match for Santiago Agudelo. In just three minutes, Etcheverry made his presence widely known with a cross from near the sideline. Flying through the air, senior Caden Frank eyed the ball and with his outstretched leg, was able to ricochet the ball past the Harding goalkeeper.

The 8-1 victory is the second largest margin in Fort Hays State men’s soccer history – the team missing the all-time record by only one goal.

Freshman goalkeeper Kieran Brown made three saves in his first collegiate start. Bevis added two assists to his stat line.

After an offensively dominant week, Fort Hays State is now above the .500 mark (4-3-1 overall) and remain undefeated in Great American Conference play.

The Tigers will be playing back in the FHSU Soccer Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 5 against Newman University.

Tiger tennis rolls past Threshers

NORTH NEWTON, Kan. – Fort Hays State improved to 4-2 overall by cruising to a 7-0 win at Bethel College (Kan.) on Friday afternoon (Sept. 27). FHSU picked up a pair of forfeits and won all seven matches contested in the duel.

In singles play, the Tigers breezed to straight-set victories at the 1-5 positions. Natalie Lubbers defeated Jennifer Harrison 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 1 position. The No. 2 match was the most tightly contested by the Threshers, but Macy Moyers won 6-4, 6-2 in straight sets over Brianna Berryman. Ellea Ediger defeated Erica Ebenkamp 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 3 position. At No. 4, Grace Holgerson defeated Cameron Bracknell 6-3, 6-0. Kimberly Stone shutout her opponent, Morgan Lantz, 6-0, 6-0. Sydney McAdoo received a forfeit win at No. 6.

Lubbers and Ediger paired together for a 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles over Harrison and Berryman. At the No. 2 position, Moyers and Holgerson defeated Bracknell and Ebenkamp 6-1. Stone and McAdoo received a forfeit win with Bethel down a player.

A few of the Tigers will compete in the ITA Fall Regional next weekend (Oct. 4-6) in Oklahoma City, a tournament that will conclude the fall schedule for FHSU.

HHS volleyball goes 2-2 in Wamego

WAMEGO, Kan. – The Hays High volleyball team went 2-2 Saturday at the Wamego Invitational. The Indians won the first match against Rock Creek in two sets (25-22, 25-22). Tasiah Nunnery recorded 10 kills and 11 assists. Macee Altman added nine kills and Brooklyn Schaffer had 17 digs.

HHS was then swept by Nemaha Central (18-25, 17-25). Tasiah Nunnery had nine kills and Brooklyn Schaffer nine digs.

The Indians lost to the host school 28-30, 24-26. Tasiah Nunnery had 15 kills and 8 assists, Kaitlin Suppes recorded 16 assists and Brooklyn Schaffer 13 digs.

In Hays’s final match of the day they beat Riley County in three sets (24-26, 25-17, 25-23). Tasiah Nunnery had 13 kills and Brooklyn Schaffer 21 digs.

The Indians are 10-5 on the season. They are back at home Tuesday to host their own quadrangular.

KHP looking for witnesses in fatal hit and run crash

WYANDOTTE COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities are investigating a hit and run crash that killed a woman walking along northbound Interstate 35 in Wyandotte County at 7th street.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol the woman was struck just after midnight.

Police have not released her identity.  The KHP is asking any witnesses to call *47 with any information regarding this incident.

KANSAS CITY (AP) — A 27-year-old Kansas City man is charged in a shooting that wounded a 5-year-old boy.

The Kansas City Star reports Maurice Webb was charged Friday after a shooting Thursday in Independence. The child was shot in the arm.

Webb, who was on parole and being monitored with an ankle bracelet, was arrested more than 20 miles (32.2 kilometers) away at a restaurant in Kansas City. He is charged with unlawful use of a weapon, armed criminal action and unlawful possession of a firearm,

Charging documents say a man and woman were arguing over the custody of their 18-month-old child.

Webb, who was sleeping in a nearby car, heard the woman yell for help and allegedly shot several rounds into the man’s vehicle as it was driving away.

KANSAS CITY (AP) — Authorities say one person has been arrested after a child was shot and wounded in a suburban Kansas City.

Officers in Independence, Missouri, responded to the scene around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday. Police spokesman Officer John Syme says the shooting happened “during some type of altercation.” The child is in stable condition at a hospital.

The suspect was arrested more than 20 miles away at a restaurant in Kansas City. No other details were immediately released, including the child’s age or what led to the altercation.

Reward offered, FBI working to identify Kan. bank robbery suspect

SEDGWICK COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities continue their investigation of bank robbery and have released new security camera images of the suspect.

Just after 2:30 p.m. September 16, police responded to a bank robbery call at the Fidelity Bank in the 2100 block of North Bradley Fair in Wichita, according to officer Charley Davidson.

Upon arrival, officers contacted employees who reported a suspect entering the bank and handing a note to a teller indicating a gun. Money was given to the suspect who then fled the business on foot. There were no injuries in this case.

Police and the FBI are still working to  identify the suspect.  We’re asking for tips to be submitted to Crime Stoppers.  If a tip leads to an arrest, the tipster will be eligible for a cash reward of up to $2,500.

FHSU student giving back in honor of her sister

Fort Hays State University student Holly Linenberger learned a lot about helping children during her high school days at Thomas More Prep-Marian in Hays, where she was a member of the Kiwanis-sponsored Key Club for four years.

Now, Linenberger – a sophomore from Munjor – has a personal tie to Kiwanis’ global mission of serving the needs of children. And she plans to do just that as a member of FHSU’s Circle K International, Kiwanis’ organization for college students.

She is spearheading a project for Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Mo., where her younger sister, Sophia, has been undergoing treatments for a rare form of cancer the past eight months.

FHSU’s Circle K group is packing 40 boxes of goodies to hand out to children on the 38-bed cancer patients floor at Children’s Mercy.

Linenberger came up with the idea while visiting Sophia in the hospital last summer. She is grateful for what Children’s Mercy has done for her sister and decided to help other children dealing with cancer.

“One day, I watched as the children received some of the goodie bags, and they were so excited,” Linenberger said.

She decided to pack some of the items that she knew her sister found useful during her hospital stays.

Fellow CKI members are helping Linenberger fill the boxes with Jolly Ranchers, tissues, hand sanitizers, activity books and stress balls. Each box comes complete with a personal, handwritten note from a CKI member.

Linenberger plans to take the boxes to Children’s Mercy personally or send them with her mom, Jenny, on one of Sophia’s trips for treatment.

“Kiwanis is close to my heart, so I thought this would be a good way to give back,” Linenberger said. “Seeing those kids’ faces light up is the best feeling.”

Fort Hays State Football plays host to Missouri Southern on Saturday night (Sept. 28) at 7 pm inside the walls of Lewis Field Stadium in Hays. Both teams enter the contest at 1-2 on the season. There will be 10 minutes between the end of the game and when the fireworks show begins.

The Tigers are coming off a thrilling 41-38 overtime win at Washburn last week. The Tigers snapped a nine-game losing skid to the Ichabods inside Yager Stadium in Topeka, a place where they were winless since 1987. FHSU kicker Dante Brown kicked a 24-yard field goal to tie the game at the end of regulation and then hit a game-winning 30-yard attempt in overtime to lift the Tigers to victory. Brown earned MIAA Special Teams Athlete of the Week for his efforts.

Fort Hays State continues to thrive with its passing attack, averaging 333 yards per game. In fact, FHSU has thrown for exactly 333 yards in each of the first three games this season. In the win at Washburn, Chance Fuller threw for 271 and Voshon Waiters threw for 62. In the two previous games, Fuller threw for all 333 yards. The Tigers own the sixth-best passing offense in NCAA Division II. This week, they face the team right behind them in that category as Missouri Southern averages 331 yards through the air per game.

The Tigers established their running game against Washburn last week, producing 161 yards on the ground. Charles Tigner led the way with 125 yards, the fifth 100-yard rushing game of his career.

Missouri Southern has improved immensely on offense under first year head coach Jeff Sims. The Lions have already scored more points than they did all of last season in just three games. The Lions have put 99 points on the board so far this season, averaging 33.3 per game. Last year, they scored just 81 points for the entire season, averaging just 7.3 per game and getting shutout five times. MSSU scored at least 27 points in each game this season. Iowa State transfer quarterback Jacob Park ranks sixth in NCAA Division II for passing yards per game (331.0). Though the offense has seen a drastic turnaround, the Lion defense is allowing 39.7 points per game so far this year, including a 52.5 average in their two losses.

Fort Hays State currently owns a six-game win streak in the series with Missouri Southern, winning all games played since 2011. Missouri Southern’s last win over FHSU occurred in 2010 in Hays by a score of 41-31. FHSU has won three meetings in both Joplin and Hays since 2011. The Tigers took last year’s meeting in Joplin by a score of 55-20.

After allowing 516 yards to Central Missouri in the season opener, the FHSU defense has tightened up the last two games allowing less than 400 yards (369 to Missouri Western, 377 to Washburn). The 516 yards allowed to Central Missouri is best so far by an opponent as the nationally ranked Mules lead NCAA Division II in total offense, averaging 603.3 total yards per game. Missouri Southern enters this contest averaging 463.3 yards per game. Senior defensive back Tanner Hoekman leads the FHSU tackling effort so far this year with 25, followed by Drew Harvey with 21 and Jordan Starks with 20. Hoekman, Starks, and Isaiah Creal-Musgray all recorded interceptions last week. Creal-Musgray’s pick was the biggest, keeping Washburn from scoring in overtime to set up the game-winning field goal by Brown.

Fort Hays State head coach Chris Brown is looking for his 60th win leading the Tigers. He is already the all-time wins leader among coaches in FHSU history.

Seeking nominations for Kansas Water Legacy and “Be the Vision”

TOPEKA – The Kansas Water Office (KWO) is accepting nominations for the Water Legacy Award as well as the “Be the Vision” recognition to be presented at the Governor’s Water Conference on the Future of Water in Kansas November 7-8 at a new location, the Hyatt Regency in Wichita, Kansas.

The Water Legacy Award recipient will be selected based on significant contributions and lasting impacts on the future of water in the state. Past recipients of the award include: Wayne Bossert in 2015, Joe Harkins in 2016, Pat Sauble in 2017 and David Pope in 2018.

“Be the Vision” recipients, which can be individuals, municipalities, companies or organizations, will be selected as an entity or individual taking extraordinary measures to conserve, reuse or adopt better practices to help ensure the future of our state’s water resources.

The deadline for both of these nominations is October 11. In addition to these awards, student poster research and photo contest entries are being accepted. Each of these will be part of the upcoming conference.

Conference registration is now available online at www.kwo.ks.gov. Conference details, tentative agenda, brochure, speakers, sponsors and hotel information can be found online as well. Deadline to register for the conference is October 24.
