EDMOND, Okla. – Fort Hays State could not get much going offensively as it fell 3-0 to Central Oklahoma in the MIAA Tournament Quaterfinals on Friday night (Nov. 8). The Tigers wrap their season at 10-6-2, while the Bronchos advance to the semifinal round at 13-4-2.
The Bronchos outshot the Tigers 12-1 in the first half. Cailey Perkins was responsible for the only Tiger shot in the first 45 minutes. In the 28th minute, UCO’s Kelsie Eason was fouled in the box, prompting an early penalty kick opportunity. Eason stepped up and knocked in her 16th goal of the season. Just five minutes later, Eason extended the lead for the Bronchos. Taryn Kedzoir dribbled down the left side of the field and crossed in a ball into the box. Eason was able to head the crossing pass through Megan Kneefel for her second of the game and 17th of the year.
The Tigers were able to test UCO’s goalkeeper Kaitlyn Asher with four shots in the second half, but none found the back of the net. Central Oklahoma tripled their lead with a goal in the 66th minute. Meridith WIlson crossed the ball from the right side of the field, landing behind the Tiger backline at the feet of Haley Post. Post volleyed the deep cross over Kneefel and the Bronchos pulled further away, 3-0.
Central Oklahoma attacked Kneefel all night with 20 shots at the senior goalkeeper. Kneefel made 11 saves out of 14 shots on goal, closing the year with an individual record of 9-5-2. Haley Post led the way for the Bronchos with seven shots, all on goal.
Fort Hays State finished with five shots on the night, including two on goal. Jenna Prince led the Tigers with two shots and one on goal.
The Tigers had a strong defensive season, allowing less than a goal per match (0.92) to their opponents. Fort Hays State shutout opponents in nine of 18 matches in 2019.
Hays High played beyond week nine of the football season for just the eighth in school history on Friday night. The tenth seeded Indians found themselves taking on the undefeated two seed, Maize South Mavericks.
Hays took the opening possession eight plays for a touchdown lead. The Indians never faced third down on the drive and needed a little luck to get into the end zone. Carson Keifer recovered a fumble in the end zone following a completed pass to the one yard line. The Matt Goodale extra point gave the Indians a 7-0 lead.
Maize South tied the game on their second possession. The Mavericks took over at the Indian yard line after a short punt and punched the ball in five plays later for a 7-7 game. Following a short Hays High punt Maize South again got into the red zone but fumbled a pitch that was recovered by Gaven Haselhorst. The Indians could not successfully move the ball and Maize South scored just two plays into their next drive on a 24 yard pass and a 14-7 lead.
The Mavericks were poised to take a two possession lead when Tucker Veach took away a overthrown pass in Maverick territory. Hays moved the ball into the red zone and Matt Goodale connected on a 26 yard field goal for a 14-10 deficit for the Indians. Maize South again threatened to score inside the red zone and again was turned away. Veach took away a second pass, his fifth of the season, and Hays entered the locker room down 14-10.
Highlights
The second half belonged to the home team. The Indian defense forced a three and out on the first Maverick drive. Maize South lined up to go for a conversion on fourth and one but the quarterback punted the ball down inside the one yard line. Hays two plays later threw an interception setting up the Mavericks inside the red zone. It took seven plays but Maize South made the most of it. A fourth and goal quarterback run from the three yard line increased the lead for Maize South at 20-10 following a blocked extra point.
The Indians would play the entire second half without their starting quarterback Dylan Dreiling. Hays never could get much traction for the rest of the game. The Indians ran just one play across the fifty yard line and gained just 25 yards in the second half. Maize South scored on three straight possessions and picked up a Indian fumble for a score and a 41-10 win.

TOPEKA – The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has rescinded a boil water advisory for the City of Portis, located in Osborne County. The advisory was issued because of a loss of pressure due to a waterline break. Failure to maintain adequate pressure may result in a loss of chlorine residuals and bacterial contamination.
Public water suppliers in Kansas take all measures necessary to notify customers quickly after a system failure or shutdown. Regardless of whether it’s the supplier or KDHE that announces a boil water advisory, KDHE will issue the rescind order following testing at a certified laboratory.
Laboratory testing samples collected from the City of Portis indicate no evidence of bacteriological contamination and all other conditions that placed the system at risk of contamination are deemed by KDHE officials to be resolved.
For consumer questions, contact the water system or call KDHE at 785-296-5514.
