Sheriff: Kan. woman, child rescued from flooded road

SALINE COUNTY — A 27-year-old  woman and a two-year-old boy had to be rescued by Saline County Sheriff’s deputies Sunday night after attempting to drive onto a flooded roadway in the eastern part of Saline County.

Deputies were sent to the 9000 block of East Magnolia Road for the report of a vehicle stalled in floodwaters, according to Saline County Sheriff Roger Soldan.

He said deputies waded into the water covering the roadway to rescue the woman from Abilene and child.

No one was injured, Soldan said.

Carrie ‘Ruth’ Jones

Former Brewster resident, Carrie “Ruth” Jones, 93, passed away April 10, 2019 at Meadow View Assisted Living in Greeley, Colorado.  She was born July 20, 1925 in Goodland, KS to Leslie and Rose (Miller) McClelland.  Ruth and her husband Duane were married on June 21, 1946 in Colby, KS.  They celebrated 70 years of marriage in 2016.

Ruth was preceded in death by her husband Duane, parents, her brothers George, Bob and Jim McClelland, and a sister Marie Edwards.

Ruth has 2 daughters, Linda (Larry) Hoffner and Monn Rose (Mike) Blank, four grandsons; Bradley Hoffner, Eric Hoffner, Aaron Blank and Caleb Blank, as well as nine great grandchildren.

Ruth grew up loving music.  She played the piano, clarinet, violin and saxophone.  Her family traveled and played at different venues when she was growing up.  She was active in 4-H and raised Holstein cattle.

She attended cosmetology school in Denver and had shops in both Goodland and Brewster.

Ruth and Duane lived many years in Brewster, KS.  She was a Girl Scout and a 4-H Leader for over 28 years.  She was active in the Brewster Senior Center, Methodist Church, VFW Auxiliary and other activities.

A memorial graveside service for Ruth will be held on Saturday, June 29, 2019 at 10:00 AM MT at the Goodland Cemetery in Goodland, KS with Pastor Mike Baughn officiating.  There will be lunch after the service. 

Memorial contributions are designated to the Brewster Senior Center and may be left at the services or mailed to Koons-Russell Funeral Home, 211 N. Main Ave., Goodland, KS 67735.

Boyd T. Reifschneider

Boyd T. Reifschneider, 93, shuffled off his mortal coil on 20 December, 2018 in Scottsdale Arizona.

He was born 25 March, 1925 in Dighton, Kansas to farmers Edward and Lettie (Thomas) Reifschneider.

After graduating from Dighton High School, Boyd enlisted in the United States Navy and served honorably on the mine sweeper USS Toucan in the South Pacific during World War II. Returning home, Boyd started a family and worked on the farm until, deciding he did not want to drive a tractor for the rest of his life, Boyd and his family moved to Scottsdale in 1963 where he studied electronics and eventually became employed in the cable television industry.

After retiring, he volunteered at the Crisis Nursery and enjoyed golf, making jewelry, and relaxing at his mountain home. He was a life time member of the American Legion, post 190.

Boyd is survived by his wife of 67 years, Elinor, children Greg (Carmen), Connie (Jerry), Cathy (Tom), and Galen (Claudine), grandchildren Tom, Patricia, Melissa (Daniel), Michael, and Mitchell, and great grandchildren Nadia, Brennan, Cooper, Natasha, and Daniel, as well as an aunt, sister-in-law, many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Graveside services will be held on Saturday, April 29, 2019 at the Dighton Cemetery in Dighton, Kansas at 11:00 A.M. with military honors provided by the United States navy.

Donations in Boyd’s name may be sent to the Wounded Warriors Project.

Police: Kansas man in critical condition after reported stabbing

HUTCHINSON — Law enforcement authorities are investigating a reported Monday morning stabbing in Hutchinson

Just before 8a.m., police were called to an apartment in the 500 block of East 3rd Street, according to scanner traffic. The victim believed to be in his 50s was stabbed in the neck.

A woman also in the apartment was wounded. However, she may be the suspect in the stabbing, according to Hutchinson Police Chief Jeffrey Hooper. Hooper said he did not know at this point if it was a domestic incident. Hooper said there is a lot of blood.

The victim was taken to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center in critical condition and a medical helicopter was requested.

Longtime Kansas Rep. Jan Meyers dies at age 90

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Longtime Rep. Jan Meyers, the first Republican woman elected to the U.S. House from Kansas, has died.

Meyers died Friday at the age of 90 at a nursing home where she was living. The cause of death was not announced.

A native of Nebraska, Meyers lived in Overland Park, Kansas, while representing the state’s 3rd Congressional District from 1985 to 1997. Before that, she served in the Kansas Senate from 1972 to 1984.

Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly on Monday ordered flags flown at half-staff at the Capitol complex to honor Meyers.

Kelly said in a statement she respected and admired Meyers, whom she called “a groundbreaking public servant.”

Sen. Pat Roberts called Meyers a trusted colleague who set a great example for future generations.

Funeral services are pending.

Reward offered for information on death of 36-year-old Kansas man

SHAWNEE COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities are investigating the  death of a Kansas man and asking the public for help with information.

Just before 10a.m. June 17, police were dispatched to a residence in the 700 block of SW Wayne in Topeka in reference to the discovery of the body of a man in the home, according to Lt. Andrew Beightel. The victim was later identified as 36-year-old John K. Waller of Topeka.

Police are asking the public to come forward with any information related to this case. Specifically, police are asking anyone in the area of SW 6th Ave. and SW MacVicar Ave. between June 3 and 4 to remember if they saw or heard any suspicious activity. Police need anyone in the area with a home surveillance system or cameras to review them for even the smallest detail.

The Shawnee County Crime Stoppers is offering up to a $2,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest in this case.

Just before 10a.m. Monday, police were dispatched to a residence in the 700 block of SW Wayne in Topeka in reference to the discovery of the body of a man in the house, according to Lt. Andrew Beightel.

Officers located the body identified as 36-year-old John K. Waller and he was pronounced dead by medical personnel.

There were several suspicious circumstances witnessed by the responding officers so, the residence was secured and crime scene officers and detectives investigated the scene.

Through evidence found at the crime scene and information from the coroner’s office, police are  investigating this crime as a homicide

Third earthquake in four days reported in Rooks County

ROOKS COUNTY — Another earthquake shook portions of northwest Kansas early Monday.

The quake just before 2 a.m. measured a magnitude 2.6 and was centered just north of the Ellis County line in Rooks County, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Monday’s quake follows a pair of stronger earthquakes in Rooks County. The USGS reported a 4.5 magnitude quake Saturday morning and a 3.3 temblor Friday. Both of those were centered northwest of Plainville.

There are no reports of damage or injury, according to the sheriff’s department in Rooks County.

LETTER: Congress should establish fair payment formula for out-of-network physicians

You may have seen the recent activity in Congress on surprise medical billing.

When presented with a patient specimen, I don’t wait in the laboratory to check the patient’s insurance. I run the right tests and review the slides at my microscope to diagnose disease. The billing for the medical service comes later.

As a physician, my colleagues and I support holding patients financially harmless from unexpected out-of-network medical bills. Physicians want to be in-network and accept the insurance plans covering their patients. Often, it’s the health insurer who drops physicians or refuses to contract with those who wish to join.

Congress needs to adopt a federal legislative proposal that includes network adequacy standards that require health plans to contract with the right numbers of physicians practicing at in-network hospitals. Any legislative proposal should also ensure that insurers and providers can negotiate reimbursement for services in an equitable manner.

Several of the proposals in Congress hand all the negotiating power to insurers. Congress should establish a fair payment formula for out-of-network physician care and use an arbitration process that allows a doctor and insurance company to settle a bill through a third-party process.

Congress must take a serious look at the proposals several physician members of Congress, led by Reps. Raul Ruiz and Phil Roe, have recently released. Their proposal is a positive step in the right direction.

Terry Lee Perez

Terry Lee Perez, 64, passed away June 22, 2019 in Larned, KS.

He was born January 10, 1955 in Kinsley, the son of Clemente Rincon and Lucia M. Mariche Perez. A lifetime area resident, he was a certified welder for Doonan Trailer in Great Bend, Kansas. He graduated from Kinsley High School in 1972. He lived in Pratt from 1986 to 1999 where he ran Pratt County Achievement place for 13 years.

He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Larned. He was an avid Chiefs fan, softball player and loved playing all sports. He loved spending time with family, his children and grandchildren and was a devoted and loving foster parent for 40 plus years.

On November 30, 1974, he married Marilyn Sue Reed in Larned. She survives.

Other survivors include: four sons, T.J. (Ally) Perez, Hutchinson, Charlie (Tamara) Perez, Larned, Brandon Perez (Emily Herrman), Pittsburg, Treg (Vanessa) Fletcher, Wichita; four daughters, Crystal Naugle, April Perez and Miesha Perez, Sydnie Morrow (Josh Bernal), all of Larned; four brothers, Felix Perez, Hutchinson, Raymond (Cindy) Perez, Anthony (Darla) Perez, both of Larned, Manuel (Marilyn) Perez, Salina; two sisters, Eleanor (Leon) Sanders, Larned, Linda (Frank) Garcia, Wichita; nine grandchildren, Elijah Perez, Aiden, Alissa and Adam O’Crotty, Nevaeh Perez, Bentley and Rowan Bernal, Hanna and Maddox Fletcher.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Guadalupe, Pete, Francisco and John Perez and two sisters, Trinadad Ruiz and Jane Bronson.

Rosary and vigil will be at 6 p.m. Thursday at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Larned, with Father Bernard Felix presiding. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday at the mortuary. Cremation will take place following the service and no burial at this time.

Memorials may be given to Terry Perez grandchildren fund, Pawnee County Humane Society or Escue Chapel, CME in care of Beckwith Mortuary, Box 477 Larned, KS 67550.
