Kan. man sentenced after father-in-law dies in drug test scam
LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — A 35-year-old Kansas man has been sentenced to prison after his father-in-law died while taking methadone to help the younger man cheat on a drug test.
Justin Jones was sentenced Friday to four years in prison for involuntary manslaughter in the 2017 death of 47-year-old Eric Everts. Both men lived in Baldwin City.
The Lawrence Journal-World reports that Jones also pleaded guilty in January to distribution of methadone.
As part of his treatment for drug addiction, Jones was required to turn in urine samples containing nothing but methadone, which treats opioid addiction.
Baldwin City investigators said in an affidavit that for months Everts took methadone and provided otherwise clean urine samples, which Jones submitted as his own. Everts was found dead at his home in September 2017.
Edward Paul Younger
Edward Paul Younger, 87, of McPherson, Kansas, passed away at 12:16 p.m., Saturday, April 20th, 2019 while in the company of family members, at Via Christi St. Francis, Wichita, Kansas.
Ed was born in Hays, Kansas on April 24, 1931, a son of Peter and Katherine (Pfannenstiel) Younger.
He was a devoted member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in McPherson.
Through the years Ed worked for the International Harvester Company as a dealer in WaKeeney, Kansas and worked for Farm Bureau as an Agency Manager in McPherson, Kansas until he retired in 2001.
Ed enjoyed golfing, spending time with his family and grandchildren.
He is survived by the love of his life Dorothy Younger, of McPherson, Kansas; his children, Lonnie Younger and his wife Cindy, of Franklin, Tennessee; Leon Younger and his wife Katherine, of Brownsburg, Indiana; LeRoy Younger and his partner Steven Spillers, of Topeka, Kansas; Tami Kaegi and her husband Grant, of Lenexa, Kansas; his brothers Frank Younger, of Hays, Kansas; Norman Younger, of Hays, Kansas; brother Richard Younger and his wife Betty, of Hays, Kansas; sisters Mary Dreiling and her husband Bob, of Hays, Kansas and sister Cora Sawazhki, of Topeka, Kansas.
He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, Jenny Pietrzak(David), Amy Flynn(Ed), Greg Younger(Lindsey), Will Younger(Noelle), John Younger, Caitlin Montgomery(Norm), Sarah Durham(Keaton), Rachel Schlichter(Kyle), Megan Leiker(Patrick), John Kaegi(Amanda) and Rachel Green(Daniel).
18 great-grandchildren, Sam, MacKenzie, Henry, Jackson, Charlie, Max, Reese, Rhett, Ocean, Lark, McCartney, Edison, Charlotte, Kennedi, Pierce, Lincoln, Lucy, Kaden.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents and his four brothers.
Visitation will be held at the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, McPherson, Kansas on Wednesday, April 24, 2019 from 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
Rosary will start at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 25th, 2019 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, McPherson, Kansas with a Mass of Christian to start at 10:00 a.m with Fr. Ben Shockey officiating.
A private family burial will be held at the McPherson Cemetery, McPherson, Kansas.

Frances Jean Flagor
Frances Jean Flagor, 82, died April 19, 2019, at Clara Barton Hospital, Hoisington. She was born
January 27, 1937, in Barton County, the daughter of Robert E. and Aurelia (Schugart) Connor. Jean graduated from Hoisington High School in 1955.
She married Jackie Edward Shreve in 1955, he preceded her in death on November 16, 1960. She then married Reuben Flagor on April 28, 1962, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Hoisington.
A lifetime Barton County resident, Jean a mother of six children, she began working part time at the Hoisington Dispatch after the children were in school. She later went on to work for Fuller Brush and Superior Essex, and finally for the Eldercare Program from which she retired.
Jean was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and Altar Society. Jean was an avid gardener, quilter, card player, and gambler. She and Reuben loved to travel to the many nearby casinos together.
Survived by her husband of nearly 57 years, Reuben; and children, Jack Flagor and wife Sherri of Hays, Janet Palmer of Dumfries, Virginia, Ron Flagor and wife Mary Ann of Pensacola, Florida, David Flagor of Kansas City, Missouri, Earl Flagor and wife Julia of Hoisington, and Robert Flagor of Kansas City, Missouri; brother, John Connor of Ellinwood; sisters, Loretta Ulrey of Larned, and Barbara Lehning of Logan; 15 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren and one more on the way.
Preceded in death by parents, husband, Jackie Shreve; brothers, Robert and Jim Connor, and sisters, Margaret Ehrlich and Mary Lou Komarek.
Friends may call noon to 8 p.m., Monday at the funeral home with Vigil with Altar Society Rosary will be 7 p.m., Monday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m., Tuesday, April 23, 2019, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Hoisington, celebrated by Father Charles Mazouch. Burial will follow in St. John Church Cemetery.

Billie D. Bartley
Smith Center resident Billie D. Bartley passed away at his home on April 20, 2019. He was 83.
He was born March 22, 1936 in Inavale, NE the son of Forest and Sarah D. (Williams) Bartley.
Billie was united in marriage to Lorraine R. Stevens on November 27, 1957 in Phillips County, KS. She survives of the home.
Other survivors include his two Daughters, Arlene Stone of Hastings, NE and Marlyce Gordier of Elm Creek; a son, Tim Bartley of Smith Center, KS; three brothers, Darral of Ravenna, NE, Alan of Formoso, KS and Jerry of Aurora NE; two sisters, Twila Bydler of Wakeeney, KS and Sharon Kaslon of Loup City, NE; 10 grandchidren; and 18 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 10 :30 a.m. Wednesday, April 24, 2019 in the Central Community Church, Smith Center, KS, with Pastor’s Casey Borger and Douglas Deneui officiating. Burial will follow in the Agra Cemetery, Agra, KS.
Mr. Barley will lie in state from Noon until 9 p.m. Monday and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel, 1115 2nd Street, Phillipsburg, KS 67661, with the family receiving friends Tuesday evening from 5:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. for visitation.

Donald W. Sherman
Donald W. Sherman, 81, Ness City, Kansas, died Friday, April 19, 2019, at Cedar Village Long Term Care, Ness City, Kansas.
Mr. Sherman was born November 28, 1937, in Mansfield, Pennsylvania, the son of Lyle Bert and Iva Matilda (Smith) Sherman. He was a resident of Penrose, Colorado, moving briefly to La Crosse, Kansas, before becoming a resident of Cedar Village, Ness City, Kansas, in February, 2018. A 1956 graduate of Mansfield High School, Mansfield, Pennsylvania, he was a system installer for Cable Television for 44 years before his retirement.
He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corp. and the Army National Guard.
On July 23, 1965, he married Sharon Burdick at Florida, Massachusetts.
Survivors include: his wife, Sharon Sherman, Buffalo, Oklahoma; three sons, Donald Sherman (Sue), Williamsport, Pennsylvania, Wes Sherman (Rhoda), La Crosse, Kansas, and Russell Sherman (Claudia), Corpus Christi, Texas; one daughter, Tammy Foster (Nic), Buffalo, Oklahoma; 11 grandchildren; two great grandchildren; four brothers, Lynn Sherman, Mansfield, Pennsylvania, Joseph Sherman, Tioga, Pennsylvania, Milton Sherman, Troy, Pennsylvania, and Walter Sherman, Mansfield, Pennsylvania; and two sisters, Delphine Copp, Wellsboro, Pennsylvania, and Mable Bradley, Mansfield, Pennsylvania.
He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, Dale Sherman; one brother, Arthur Sherman; and one sister, Dorothy Smith.
Visitation will be Monday, April 22, 2019, from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at the Janousek Funeral Home, La Crosse, Kansas, with the family receiving friends from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M.
Church visitation will be Tuesday, April 23, 2019, from 9:00 A.M. to 10:00 A.M. at the First Christian Church, La Crosse, Kansas.
Funeral service will be Tuesday, April 23, 2019, at 10:00 A.M. at the First Christian Church, La Crosse, Kansas, with Pastor Mark Sizemore officiating. Interment will be in the La Crosse City Cemetery, La Crosse, Kansas.

Daniel Gordon Eldridge
Daniel Gordon Eldridge, age 55, of Hays, Kansas passed away Friday, April 19, 2019 at Hays Medical Center. He was born January 7, 1964 in Inglewood, California to Robert Gordon and Judith Ann (Beach) Eldridge. Daniel enjoyed Music, Sports, beach Life especially surfing.
He is survived by his parents, Judy and Larry Cox of Lancaster, California; his wife, Chris Klinger of Hays; a daughter, Anna Moore of Ellis, Kansas; two brothers, Richard Cox and Jeremy Cox both of Hays and two sisters, Deborah Pierce of Russell Springs, Kentucky and Darlene Eldridge of California.
He was preceded in death by his father.

Paul F. Schmidtberger
Paul F. Schmidtberger, age 89, of Great Bend, Kansas died Saturday, April 20, 2019, at the River Bend Assisted Living Center, Great Bend, Kansas. He was born July 24, 1929, at Gorham, Kansas to John Frank and Albina (Frank) Schmidtberger. He married Vera (Romme) on December 27, 1951 at Victoria, Kansas.
He was an electrical lineman for Western-Aquila Electrical Company for 25 years and retired in 1995. He was a U S Army veteran and served during the Korean conflict. He grew up at Gorham, attended Gorham Grade School and was a 1947 graduate of Gorham High School. Paul was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Eagles and has lived in Great Bend since 1951. Paul and his wife Vera raised Vera’s two brothers Leon and Tom Romme after their mother died.
Survivors include his wife, Vera Schmidtberger, Great Bend, KS; one son, Mark and wife, Dianna, Schmidtberger, Cheney, KS; one sister, Lila Bollig, Hays, KS; one brother-in-law, Leon Romme and wife, Jolene, Lawrence, KS; five grandchildren, Aaron (Elizabeth) Schmidtberger, Jamie (Trent) Peters, Jessica Tomlinson, Kyle Schmidtberger his fiancé, (Christina Bulcao) and Andy Schmidtberger; 11 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Steven Schmidtberger; three brothers, Lewis Schmidtberger and wife, Armella; Elmer Schmidtberger and wives, Jean, Norma and Velma; Robert Schmidtberger and wife, Marie; two brothers-in-law Edwin Bollig and Tom Romme.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, April 25, 2019, at The Basilica of St. Fidelis, Victoria, Kansas. Burial will be in St. Fidelis Cemetery, Victoria, Kansas with military honors by the Victoria V.F.W. Post No. 1751.

Eleanor Aileen Swank
Eleanor Aileen Swank, age 92, WaKeeney, passed away April 17, 2019, at WaKeeney Trego County Lemke Memorial Hospital Long Term Care. She was born November 24, 1926, in Trego County to Palmer E. and Caroline (Massier) Deines. She was baptized at Christ Lutheran Church, Ellis, KS, on December 22, 1926.
Eleanor was united in marriage to Ray R. Swank on January 27, 1945. She graduated from Trego Community High School in 1945. She was confirmed into the membership of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, WaKeeney, KS on February 3, 1952, where she has been an active member.
Eleanor and Ray enjoyed 52 years of marriage until Ray passed away on December 19, 1997. To this union one daughter, Linda Kay Swank was born.
She was a homemaker all her life and worked outside the home as a clerk at the grocery store and several stores in WaKeeney. Eleanor was a member of the VFW Auxiliary #3449 for 64 years.
Eleanor is survived by her daughter Linda Kay and husband Lloyd Pfeifer of Morland; three grandsons, Loren and wife Jennifer Pfeifer, WaKeeney, Lance and wife Suzann Pfeifer of Firestone, CO, and LeRay Pfeifer of Schoenchen; two great-grandsons Alexander Pfeifer and Jonah Pfeifer; brother Don and wife Helen Deines of WaKeeney; sister Dona Smith, Great Bend; nieces, nephews and a host of relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Palmer E. and Caroline Deines and husband, Ray R. Swank.
Funeral services will be 10:30 am Wednesday, April 24, 2019, at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, WaKeeney. Burial will follow in the WaKeeney City Cemetery.
Visitation will be Tuesday evening from 5 to 7, at Schmitt Funeral Home, WaKeeney.

Delores Irene Glendening
Delores Irene Glendening passed away on April 19, 2019 at the Rooks County Health Center in Plainville, Kansas at the age of 85. She was born on June 17, 1933 to Boyd and Ollie (Lafferty) Vose. While growing up on her parents’ farm in Phillips County, she attended school in Stockton, and graduated with the class of 1951 from Stockton High School.
On June 24, 1951, Delores was united in marriage to John Glendening. During their marriage, John and Delores formed an extensive, loving family with four children, eight grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. In addition to raising her family, Delores was bookkeeper for her husband’s auto body repair shop and Treasurer for the United Methodist Church. She was active with many other functions of the church and volunteered for several other community groups.
Delores loved quilting, shopping, and being involved in her children and grandchildren’s activities. She could cook up a great pork roast which she did often for family gatherings.
Delores is survived by her husband of 68 years, John Glendening of Stockton; four children, Bob and wife Teresa of Stockton, Brad and wife Alice of Haven, Deena Lighty and husband Greg of Augusta, and Todd and partner Vernon of San Diego, CA; eight grandchildren, Adam of Wichita, Jason of Philipsburg, Aaron of McPherson, Nathan of Stockton, Amy of Wichita, Charles Lighty of Augusta, Jordan Carpenter of Stockton, and Jeremy Hrabe of Dodge City; and several great-grandchildren.
Delores had a love for God, family, and community. She cherished her family and had an unending love for them. She will be gone, but this unending love for her family and others will always be present in the hearts of those who knew her.
A funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 23, 2019, at Plumer-Overlease Funeral Home with Delbert Stanton officiating. Visitation will be on Monday 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Denim Day on April 24 to raise awareness of sexual assault
As part of Sexual Assault Awareness month, the Ellis County United Way will join the millions of people across the world wearing jeans with a purpose, to support survivors and educate themselves and others about all forms of sexual violence.
This campaign was triggered by a ruling from the Italian Supreme Court where a rape conviction was overturned because the justices stated since the victim was wearing tight jeans, she must have helped her rapist remove her jeans, thereby implying consent. Sadly, similar outcomes from court hearings such as this happen in rural Kansas.
To spread awareness of sexual assault, the United Way is asking you to participate by wearing jeans on April 24. Post a picture of yourself wearing jeans with the hashtag #UWDenimDay to raise awareness and support for survivors of sexual assault.

Marc E. Huslig, DDS
Marc E. Huslig, DDS, 55, passed away Friday April 19, 2019, in Great Bend. Marc was born September 9, 1963 in Great Bend the son of Marcus and Caraleta (Lonnon) Huslig. He married Teri Turkle on June 7, 1986 at Mulvane. She survives.
Marc was a Great Bend resident since 1997, coming from Mulvane. He owned Marc E. Huslig, DDS, Chartered. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, American Dental Association, Kansas Dental Association, Central District Dental Society and Academy of General Dentistry. He enjoyed hunting, biking, gardening, playing video games, fly-fishing, coaching his children, and watching Wichita State Shocker basketball. He was an accomplished musician.
Survivors include, wife Teri of the home; his mother, Caraleta Huslig; one son, Matthew Huslig of Great Bend; three daughters, Taylor Huslig, Madison Huslig and Reagan Huslig, all of Great Bend; one brother, Aaron Huslig and wife Becky of Andover; one sister, Valerie Chancellor and husband Tom of Mulvane; 5 nieces and 10 nephews. He was preceded in death by his father; and a brother, Matthew Huslig; and one niece.
Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 9:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 23, 2019 at Bryant Funeral Home, with Vigil and Knights of Columbus Rosary at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, April 24, 2019 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, with Father Don Bedore presiding.
