Interest rates double today to 6.8% on some student loans. Congress was unable to reach an agreement on a deal to prevent the increase. Many lawmakers say they hope to reconsider the issue shortly after returning from the July 4 recess.

The increase hits about 7 million new loans this year for middle and low income students. It does not apply to existing loans.
