Kansas youth minister backs out of plea deal

There was a surprise development Tuesday in the Jordan Young case in Geary County District Court.

The former music minister at the Faith Tabernacle Apostolic Church in Junction City has been accused of sexually molesting boys in his church. He was scheduled to appear in courtBrown Tuesday where he was expected to enter into a plea agreement, but instead confirmed he was firing his lawyer.  There was no plea and the case has now been rescheduled for 9 a.m. Thursday to take up issues such as appointment of new counsel, and the scheduling of a preliminary hearing in the six cases involving Young.

Young is charged in multiple cases of alleged child molestation  involving boys in his church. He is facing counts ranging from lewd and lascivious behavior to aggravated criminal sodomy.

For the court proceedings a handcuffed Young was brought into the courtroom where his attorney Tom Lemon, announced that his client, “does not wish for me to represent him any further. He does not wish to proceed with the plea.”

When Judge David Platt asked Young if that was accurate he responded, “Yes sir,” and then gave the same response when the Judge asked him if he wanted to fire his lawyer here today. When asked if he was going to hire another attorney Young stated, “No sir,” and when asked what he thought would happen he stated that he could be appointed one…meaning an attorney.

Platt allowed Lemon to withdraw from the case based on Young’s comments and remanded the case back to a magistrate judge for the Thursday morning hearing in District Court.

Young has been in custody at the Geary County Detention Center since his arrest last August
