(AP) — Lawrence school district officials say they are concerned about the educational success of students enrolled in the city’s two virtual schools.

About 1,500 of the district’s students work from home through the two charter schools, which have nearly doubled enrollment in five years.

The state assessment data shows half of the students tested at Lawrence Virtual High School in 2012 did not meet state standards in math, and 18.5 percent failed to meet state standards in reading. Math scores were also substantially lower at Lawrence Virtual School, which serves grades K-8, although reading scores are closer to the norm.

Lawrence Superintendent Rick Doll says the district is dissatisfied with the results and will look at ways to improve the schools’ performances.
