7:30 p.m. According to Ellis County Rural Fire Director Dick Klaus, the fire at a residence in the 1600 Block of St. Martin in Catherine on Friday was started by a candle in a bedroom. “There was significant smoke inside when we arrived,” said Klaus. “We finally found the fire in a back room of the home.”
The home suffered significant smoke and water damage. Other than a couple of fire fighters who needed a break in the 100 degree heat, there were no injuries. Fire crews from Hays, Catherine, and Victoria helped fight the blaze.
5:40 p.m. Reports from the scene indicate the structure fire in the 1600 Block of St. Martin in Catherine is out. Stay tuned to Eagle Radio and Check Hays Post for more information as it becomes available.
5:20 p.m. Fire crews have requested ice packs to help cool fire crews working in temperatures over 100 degrees.
4:46 p.m. Additional fire fighters are being dispatched to the scene of the fire. Midwest Energy crews have also been dispatched to the fire.

4:34 p.m. Ellis County Rural Fire is responding to report of a structure fire in the 1600 Block of St. Martin in Catherine, in northeast Ellis County.
