Update –  The Hays Police Department released the following statement regarding the motor vehicle accident that happened Tuesday, September 24th.

“On September 24, 2013 at 7:50 a.m. an on-duty Hays Police Officer rear ended a motorist in the 300 block of West 27th Street. An ambulance was dispatched to the accident scene due to the driver of the other vehicle having a headache and neck pain. The Hays Police car was towed from the scene, and the officer had a minor injury to his lip which did not require medical attention.

“The Ellis County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the accident and we thank Sheriff Harbin for their assistance.  We are also thankful that no one was seriously injured and that all parties involved were wearing their seatbelts.”

Sheriff Ed Harbin, whose department is finalizing the official report for the accident, told Hays Post the officer was Dustin Gall.  Harbin said Gall was distracted (looking down at a mobile data unit) when he ran into the back of a Chevy Avalanche driven by Stephanie Calvery of Hays who was stopped west of the intersection of Ash and 27th waiting to turn.  He added that a mobile data unit is a police-issued computer system used in patrol cars.

8:20 a.m.  Tuesday morning’s injury accident has been cleared. Nobody was transported for treatment. Law enforcement remain on the scene.

First responders are on the scene of an injury accident at 27th and Ash in Hays. We will have more details as they become available.
