A 56-year-old Kansas man wanted in connection with a kidnapping and beating case last month was captured after a chase with law enforcement around the north side of Hutchinson on Thursday.
William Dale Runyon faces charges of aggravated kidnapping and aggravated robbery involving the case where a man was able to escape the trunk of a vehicle in Salina. That was back on September 21. Although the kidnapping ended there, it apparently started here in Reno County.
Sheriff investigators got word Thursday that Runyon might be at a residence in the 200 block of West 15th. As they approached the black work truck that he was in, he allegedly backed up in the alley onto Adams and nearly struck vehicles traveling that street. He then led law enforcement on a chase on Adams and Main, and various side streets in the city. Sheriff Captain Steve Lutz says at some point, he actually lost some plywood that was in the back of the truck. He ended up on West 19th, where he ran the barricades near where officials were working the fatal fire. He couldn’t get through because of the fire trucks, so he stopped and ran from the vehicle. Hutchinson Police Detectives were at the fire to assist in that investigation and heard the scanner traffic. They then took off after Runyon on foot and were able to stop him in the driveway of a nearby residence.
Lutz says he will most likely face additional charges associated with the chase with law enforcement.
Runyon is listed as an absconder from the Kansas Department of Corrections for convictions involving the manufacture and use of methamphetamine.
Arrested in Salina in association with this case was 25-year-old Thomas Beatty and 27-year-old Chivon Leon, both of Salina. They were taken into custody after the victim reported that he was abducted and beaten.
Beatty is originally from Hutchinson according to Lutz, while the victim was living in Hutchinson and is originally from Salina. Lutz says there is a connection between the people involved in both cities.
Beatty and Leon face charges in Saline County of kidnapping, aggravated robbery, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and criminal restraint. Bond for Leon is set at 40-thousand 500-dollars while Beatty is being held with out bond at this time.
Runyon’s bond is set at 150-thousand dollars and will most likely make an appearance in court on Friday.
