Plans for New EMS Building Won’t Work

EMS-Rural FireAt Monday night’s Ellis County Commission meeting the commission discussed a height issue that has come up with the northern part of the proposed EMS/Rural fire building.

Currently the building is in a general commercial zone and buildings in that type of zone that are within 150 feet of a residential zone cannot have a site angle of more than 22 ½ degrees, the EMS building is 38.2 degrees.

County officials met with Hays Public Works Director I.D. Creech and County Administrator Greg Sund said in his report they have four options. The first would be to redesign the building. It has been proposed to slope the roof of the north bay of the building. The second option is to seek a variance. Officials could change the zoning of the property or the final option would be to amend the ordinance.

The architect asked about seeking a zone change because the ordinance only applies to general commercial zones.

County and City officials are set to meet Tuesday to discuss possible options.
