10/18/13 – The Ellis County Sheriff’s Department provided an update on Thursday evening’s accident.
According to Ellis County Sheriff Ed Harbin, the Ellis County Sheriff’s Department responded to a farm accident that left one person injured Thursday evening. The accident happened on private property at the 600 block of 300th avenue around 5:30pm.
Jay Barker was backing a horse trailer up to a shed to unload some hay bales. His wife, Kay Philip, was guiding her husband back while holding the trailer door open. As he got near the shed, Barker lost sight of his wife. Believing she was coming around to the driver’s side window to continue guiding him, Barker continued to slowly back up. He continued backing up until he wasn’t able to move any further.
Upon exiting the vehicle, he heard his wife screaming. Philip had become pinned between the trailer and the shed. Barker pulled the vehicle forward and called 911.
Philip was flown via Eagle Med to Hays Medical Center for treatment.
Ellis county EMS, Victoria Police, Ellis County Sheriff’s and Ellis County Rural Fire Dept and Eagle Med responded to the scene.
6:16 p.m. Eagle Med is transporting a patient to Hays Medical Center.
6:09 p.m. An Eagle Med Helicopter has arrived on the scene to transport someone from the scene of Thursday’s accident.
Law enforcement officials and emergency responders are on the scene of an accident near 300th and Ranch Road Southeast of Hays. One individual is seriously injured. Stay tuned to Eagle Radio and check Hays Post for more information as it becomes available.
