About 100 collection sites in Kansas, including Hays, will be open this Saturday, October 26, during the Drug Enforcement Administration’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.
“Twice as many Americans abuse prescription drugs as the number abusing cocaine, heroin, hallucinogens and inhalants combined,” says U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom. “Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse.”
The Ellis County Drug Enforcement Unit will provide an opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted drugs.
The public is encouraged to bring prescription medication for disposal to the north parking lot of the Law Enforcement Center, 105 W. 12th, in Hays. The service is free and anonymous.
In its six previous Take Back events, DEA and its partners took in more than 2.8 million pounds–1,400 tons–of pills.
