Former police chief gets new trial in molestation case

Hutch Post

The Kansas Supreme Court has reversed the conviction of former Inman Police Chief Michael Akins and remanded the case back to McPherson County District Court for a new trial.

Akins was sentenced to two life sentences under Jessica’s Law, plus another 59 months,  for the sexual molestation of his five step-children while he was married to their mother.

The case was appealed, and the state ruled that the prosecution erred in several ways and committed misconduct in several areas during the trial. It also says the court excluded evidence, failed to properly instruct the jury on several issues and imposed an unconstitutional sentence.

No new trial date has been scheduled.
