KDOT reopen roads in western Kansas (UPDATE)

KDOT reopened the interstate and other routes, which were closed earlier today due to high wind conditions and poor visibility.

The Kansas Department of Transportation closed highways Thursday due to high winds and poor visibility.

  • At 1:50 p.m., KDOT closed U.S. 36 from Atwood west to the Colorado border and Kansas 27 from Goodland north to the U.S. 36 junction.
  • At 2:50 p.m., KDOT closed Interstate 70 from Burlington, Colo., to Colby.
  • U.S. 83 in Thomas and Sheridan counties is closed from the U.S. 24 junction to the Kansas 383/83/23 junction due to an accident.
  • At 3:45 p.m., KDOT closed U.S. 83 from Oberlin south to the Kansas 383 junction in Decatur County.

In Goodland, the National Weather Service reported winds of 45 mph with gusts up to 55 mph. Winds of similar speeds throughout the area kicked up heavy dust and threatened to blow vehicles off roads.

Authorities in Cheyenne County reported the wind caused a semi to roll over on U.S. 36 west of St. Francis.
