ELLIS — A nonprofit business in Ellis has reached a seven-year goal and is ready to “give back to the community.”

According to Vera Haver of the Ellis Community Thrift Shop, the shop is accepting grant applications to fund other nonprofits in Ellis.

Haver said  a group of Ellis residents decided to start the thrift shop with the goal that once the building was paid off, board members would use extra funds to start a grant program.

Haver said the idea started because of a “dire need” in the community.

“There are so many organizations that have great missions, but a lack of funds to support and accomplish what they set out to do,” Haver said.

Board members will consider all types of grant applications but would like funds spent on “tangible” items which will stay in the community of Ellis, she said.

The board is accepting applications until Jan. 31. Call (785) 726-2546 or stop by the shop, 1013 Washington, for more information.
