Hays city commissioners voted to annex a piece  of land south of Hays Medical Center into city limits and rezone it  for development at Thursday’s city commission meeting.

The “Geist Addition” is located on the south side of 22nd Street from Canterbury Drive to Wheatland Avenue.

The vote re-categorized the land from an “Agricultural District” to an “Office and Institution District.”

According to director of public works I.D. Creech the land can be used  for a variety of developmental purposes such as housing, clinics, non-profit organizations, parks and more.

City Manager Toby Dougherty told commissioners he has already been approached with a few proposals.

He said there is a “possibility of the state locating offices there”  and he has also been approached by a developer who wants to build multi-unit housing on the property.

Dougherty said he will have more details about the housing proposal at the next city commission work session.
