The Hays USD 489 Board of Education will meet in regular session at 6:30 p.m. Monday at Rockwell Administration Center, with budget and organizational issues on the agenda.
Following the recent resignation of Darren Schumacher, board vice president, the board is expected to formally accept the resignation and post the vacancy. The notice will allow the board to appoint a replacement no sooner than 15 days following the expected April 1 publication of the notice.
The remaining board members also will nominate and appoint a replacement for the post of vice president of the board.
Budgetary matters are expected again to dominate the discussion, however, as the district attempts to bring its budget out of an estimated $1.3 million hole.
The board will consider approving an annual fee of $150 per student for students riding the bus but who live within 2.5 miles of their school. Students who qualify for the free-or-reduced lunch program would be exempted.
The board also will consider increasing workbook/materials fees for the 2014-15 school year from $100 per student to $130 per student.
Also on the agenda is a proposition in increase the local option budget 1 percent to 31 percent. If the resolution is approved, the district would have a mail-in referendum, expected to be held July 1.
The increase, if approved by voters, would generate just less than $200,000 in additional revenues, plus additional state funding.
