Kansas legislators continue school funding talks

school fundingTOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — With a Friday deadline looming, Kansas legislators are resuming talks on proposals to satisfy a state Supreme Court ruling on funding of public schools.

House and Senate budget committees were scheduled to meet Tuesday to hear public comment on their proposals. Both are aimed at increasing funding by up to $129 million in the next school year to comply with the court’s March 7 ruling.

The decision came in a 2010 lawsuit by parents and school districts claiming that the Kansas school funding system was unconstitutional.

Legislators are working under a tight schedule as they prepare to start a three-week recess on Friday. The session will resume in late April to finish any remaining business.
