DODGE CITY — Students at Fort Hays State University planning on careers in dentistry volunteered at the Kansas Dental Charitable Foundation’s 13th Kansas Mission of Mercy, a two-day event intended to provide free dental care to those in need.

From Feb. 28 to March 1, more than 1,100 patients were treated at the Western State Bank Expo Center in Dodge City.

In a news release, the foundation said nearly 750 volunteers registered for this year’s event, including approximately 100 dentists. More than $800,000 of free dental services were provided.

“Thanks to funding from FHSU’s SGA Appropriations, our Pre-Dental Club members had a great time getting hands-on experience with their future profession and with helping grateful patients improve their lives by providing the care they need,” said FHSU Pre-Dental Club founder Leigh Reynolds, Liberty, Mo., junior.

The foundation said the next Kansas Mission of Mercy is scheduled for Feb. 13 through Feb. 14, 2015, in Salina.

The Kansas Dental Charitable Foundation was established in 2003 from a grant from the Kansas Dental Association Relief Fund. Its mission is to provide funding and resources to improve oral health in the state of Kansas. Since its inception, it has provided $100,000 in grants targeted to small, community-based projects that focus on collaboration between community organizations.
