As we begin to close out the final two games of the 2011 regular season, teams across the state of Kansas face the most important games of the season. Tonight’s Y102 Area Game of the Week comes to you from Hill City for another 8-Man 1 district 7 matchup between the Hill City Ringnecks and Quinter Bulldogs.
Tonight’s game features a pair of teams that may have been two of the most successful 8-Man 1 teams in recent years. The visiting Quinter Bulldogs are just two years removed from third state championship in school history.
The Bulldogs are putting together another solid season, they are 6-1 and a perfect 4-0 in district action after defeating Hoxie last week 34-18. The Bulldogs offense is led by running back Logan Reed. Reed was the leading rusher last season and has already eclipsed one-thousand yards this season to go along with 19 touchdowns.
But the Bulldogs will be without their starting quarterback, Sophomore Colton Corwin, who went down with a knee injury.
Quinter’s defense maybe the strongest part of this years squad. They are allowing 172 yards a game and have allowed just three teams to score in double figures. Reed, Toby Waggoner and Brian Ochs anchor the defense. Ochs has 87 tackles and 10.5 sacks this season.
Their opponent, the Hill City Ringnecks, are a year removed from the school’s second ever playoff appearance and their first ever appearance in a state championship game, after finishing 11-2 last season. After graduating four starters on offense and six starters are defense the Ringnecks have had to have players step up this season. Two of those players are Dylan Anderson and Adam Pfeifer. Pfeifer was the leading returning rusher from last season with 646 yards and eight touchdowns. But Pfeifer was lost for the rest of the season in week 2. Quarterback Dylan Anderson picked up the slack, totaling 1,480 yards through the first seven games of the year. But Anderson was also bitten by the injury bug and is expected to miss some time.
Solomon Wilson, who was the leading receiver so far this season, for the Ringnecks will start at quarterback tonight. Wilson has not attempted a pass in a varsity game this season. But he will try and fill the hole left by Anderson.
Tonight’s Y102 Area Game of the Week features the 6-1 Quinter Bulldogs and the 2-5 Hill City Ringnecks in another district game.
Kickoff from Hill City is set for 7pm with the Fort Hays State University Office of Admissions Pre-Game Show beginning at 7pm tonight.
