WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — A man is dead after being shot by a Wichita police officer following a high-speed chase that started when the driver fled from a traffic stop.
The Wichita Eagle reports the incident began at 2:29 a.m. Thursday when the officer tried to pull the man’s car over for a traffic violation, but the driver didn’t stop until about two minutes later.
The officer told a dispatcher the man had slurred speech and bloodshot eyes, and may have a weapon. Police say the driver took off and led the officer on a chase that reached 75 mph in a 40-mph zone.
The officer reported shots fired at 2:34 a.m., and a dispatch supervisor said the man, believed to be in his 30s, was hit in the chest.
