Monday’s Hays USD 489 work session agenda calls for discussion of several items aimed at eliminating a $1.3 million shortfall for the 2014-15 school year, including discussion of fees increases and staff cuts.

Superintendent Dean Katt will offer an update of proposed changes in the district’s transportation policy, the board of education will discuss proposed increases in workbook and enrollment fees.

In light of the proposed school funding compromise passed last week by the Legislature, Katt also will give an update onĀ  options for accessing funding through an increase in the local option budget. On the agenda is discussion of raising the LOB from 30 percent to 31 percent.

Other agenda items is a resolution for the non-renewal of non-tenured and tenured teachers. The full-time equivalent of 13 positions likely will not be filled in the coming school year, and the district has notified 16 affected employees their contracts likely will not be renewed.

The board will also discuss formally inviting those who have applied to fill the school board’s vacant seat to the April 21 USD 489 board meeting to give a presentation as to why they would like to be on the school board.

The candidates include Gerald Braun, Mandy Fox, Patrick Scott, Sarah Rankin and Kris Munsch.

USD 489’s website provides a complete agenda.

The work session is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at the Rockwell Administration Center.
