Ah, spring is here, right? Not so fast.

An upper-level disturbance will once again bring a dose of wintry conditions to western Kansas late Wednesday to Thursday morning.

The best chance for snow is along the Interstate 70 corridor, said Kelly Sugden, a National Weather Service meteorologist based in Dodge City.

The predicted accumulation, however, is down from earlier forecasts.

“Probably an inch or so,” Sugden said.

And the roller-coaster ride will continue, with the temperature popping back up into the 60s and 70s by Friday. A possibility of precipitation returns Saturday and Sunday.

“It’s pretty typical for April,” Sugden said of the drastic mercurial shifts, the most obvious being last week’s 90-degree Saturday followed by snow on Sunday. “That was a pretty big swing.”

Looking forward, the weather is expected to remain variable for at least the next 10 days, he added.

Dramatic temperature swings — cold fronts bashing against warmer air — are key ingredients for severe weather, although the Dodge City office has yet to issue any severe weather advisories this spring.
