TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — The fate of a bill that would lower the amount required for investment in a destination casino in southeast Kansas rests with Gov. Sam Brownback. The deadline for signing the bill is Friday.

Earlier this month legislators approved the bill, which would lower the investment requirement for construction of a state-owned casino in either Cherokee or Crawford county. The amount would be lowered to a minimum of $50 million, down from the current $225 million requirement.

The bill also lowers the initial deposit to $5.5 million from $25 million.

Southeast Kansas officials have lobbied for the lower amounts, saying the higher investment requirement has made it financially prohibitive for casino operators to enter the market.

Three other state casinos are operating in Dodge City, Kansas City and Mulvane.
