Crews from the Hays Fire Department were called to 409 W. 13th to extinguish of garage fire Monday evening, forcing several blocks of area streets to be blocked.
According to Fire Chief Gary Brown, crews were called to the scene at 7:55 p.m. Monday evening to a fire at a detached two-car garage.
Brown said when crews arrived the fire “was really going,” but crews got the blaze under control. Twenty-four firefighters responded, and the fire was under control by 8:19 p.m.
The fire building sustained moderate damage, the HFD reported. The garage contained no vehicles but was being used as a work shop and storage area. The fire is believed to have started on or around a work bench in the garage but the cause has not been determined.
“Your city of Hays firefighters would like to remind everyone that having and practicing a home fire escape plan can help protect you and your family when a fire occurs,” Brown said in a news release. “Each member of your family should know two ways out and there should be an outside meeting place where everyone gathers.”
