The Hays Eagles Senior American Legion baseball team defeated Canon City, Colorado 8-3 Sunday to advance to the title game of the Bubba’s Bash tournament in Canon City. The Eagles then lost 4-3 to North Platte, Nebraska to finish runner-up.
The Eagles go 4-1 in the tournament and are now 9-3 on the season. Their next action is Thursday at the Battle of Omaha.
Monarchs 3-0 in Nebraska
The Monarchs went 3-0 in McCook, Nebraska over the weekend. After wins over Plattsmouth and McCook, Nebraska on Saturday, the Monarchs defeat Colby 8-3 Sunday. The Monarchs score two in the first then after Colby tie the game with two in the third, Hays gets a run in the bottom of the inning off an error. They then blow it open with four in the fifth and another run in the sixth.
Jordan Gottschalk went 3-for-3 with two RBIs. Braiden Werth picks up the complete game victory, allowing three unearned runs on four hits, striking out seven and walking one.
The Monarchs are now 7-3. They host Great Bend on Wednesday.
The Eagles and Monarchs were scheduled to play tonight at Larks Park but that game has been cancelled.
