GREAT BEND — At 8:51 a.m. Tuesday, the Great Bend Fire Department was dispatched to 1108 Morton for a structure fire. Upon arrival, fire crews found smoke showing from a two-story, wood-frame home.
The fire was knocked down quickly, but fire personnel remained on the scene until 2 p.m.
Battalion Chief Eugene Perkins of the Great Bend Fire Department said the fire started when a floor joist broke between the basement and the first floor in the older home and that caused an electrical short.
Fire damage was confined largely to a bedroom on the first floor, however, some fire damage did extend to the second floor.
There was smoke and heat damage throughout the house, but no one was home at the time of the fire. Perkins said the fire caused significant damage in excess of $30,000. The home is owned by Chandler Leon and Nicole Dixon.
