A strong upper level storm system will move east across the central high plains today bringing rain and eventually snow to much of western Kansas. Light rain or drizzle will be possible across the forecast area this morning with precipitation expected to slowly transition to light snow west to east late this morning into this afternoon.

Meanwhile, a strong area of low pressure will track east across the Texas panhandle into western Oklahoma today influencing very strong northerly winds of 30 to 40 mph by early this afternoon with gusts near 50 mph. This will cause visibilities to deteriorate after the transition to snow occurs. As a result, a winter weather advisory for snow and blowing snow is in effect through early this evening for areas generally north of a line from Liberal to Pratt. Snow accumulations of one to three inches are possible here with lesser amounts likely in our extreme southeast.

Winds will begin to subside this evening as the strong surface low pushes further off to our east.
Today: Periods of rain before 1pm, then periods of snow. High near 39. Very windy, with a north wind between 28 and 36 mph, with gusts as high as 46 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. Total daytime snow accumulation of 2 to 4 inches possible.
Tonight: A 40 percent chance of snow, mainly before 10pm. Cloudy during the early evening, then gradual clearing, with a low around 24. Blustery, with a north northwest wind 21 to 24 mph decreasing to between 9 and 12 mph.
