Governor Sam Brownback today announced two appointments to the newly created K-12 Student Performance and Efficiency Commission. The commission was established as part of HB 2506, the education bill.

The first two of the Governor’s three at-large appointments are school superintendents Dr. Jim Hinson of Shawnee Mission and Bev Mortimer of Concordia.

“Both Jim and Bev bring the valuable perspective of educators to the work of this commission,” said Governor Brownback. “Their experience in the classroom, combined with leadership and administrative knowledge make them excellent additions to a commission tasked with the important role of establishing guidelines to measure student success.”

Hinson has spent a career in education, including 17 years as superintendent both in Shawnee Mission and the Independence school districts. He has a proven track record of fiscal success and community engagement. He received his doctorate in educational administration from St. Louis University. Hinson is the recipient of several awards including the Excellence in Educational Leadership Aware from the University Council for Educational Administration, Inc. and was named the 2007 Greater Kansas City Superintendent of the Year by the Missouri Association of School Administrators.

Mortimer possesses a wealth of experience from the classroom and as an administrator. She received a Bachelor’s degree in elementary education from the University of Kansas and a Master’s in educational administration from Kansas State University. She currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Kansas/Missouri Superintendents Forum, is a member of the KASA Board of Directors and a member of the National Superintendents Roundtable.

“I am grateful to both Jim and Bev for their willingness to participate in this commission, and for their unfailing devotion to Kansas students,” said Governor Brownback.
