KU’s Wiggins, Embiid taken in first three picks of NBA Draft

NEW YORK (AP) – Kansas’ Andrew Wiggins and Joel Embiid become just the fourth teammates drafted in the first three picks since 1980 to be drafted in the first three picks.

The Cleveland CavaliersĀ used the first overall pick in the draft to select forward Andrew Wiggins, who averaged a Kansas freshman-record 17.1 points last season. Wiggins became the best option for the Cavs once Embiid suffered a stress fracture in his right foot shortly before the draft.

The 76ers snared Embiid with the third choice after the Milwaukee Bucks picked Duke freshman Jabari Parker. Embiid averaged 11 points, eight rebounds and 2.6 blocks as a Kansas freshman last season but missed the NCAA tournament due to a back injury.

Kentucky’s Anthony Davis and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist were taken 1-2 in 2012.

The other college teammates taken in the top three since 1980 were Emeka Okafor and Ben Gordon of Connecticut in 2004, and Jay Williams and Mike Dunleavy of Duke in 2002. They were both selected second and third.

The New York Knicks selected Wichita State forward Cleanthony Early with the 34th pick. TheĀ
6-foot-7 Early averaged 16.4 points and 5.9 rebounds last season as senior, both team highs.
