The Hays Monarchs go 2-0 Friday on the first day of the Wild West Fest tournament to run their win streak to 10 games. The Monarchs defeat the Wichita Grays 2-1 then defeat Canon City, Colorado 5-1. The Monarchs improve to 14-3 on the season.
Ryan Ruder’s RBI single in the bottom of the seventh broke a 1-1 tie to lift the Monarchs past the Wichita Grays. Ryan Schippers put Hays up 1-0 with an RBI single in the third. The Grays tied the game with a run in the top of the seventh. Dick Hockett picks up the complete game victory allowing one run on four hits with six strikeouts and five walks.
The Monarchs score three in the first then added single runs in the second and fourth against Canon City. Kameron Schmidt allowed the one-run on six hits while striking out nine and walking one for the complete game victory. Jordan Gottschalk and Ryan Schippers both had two hits and two RBIs.
