
The Fort Hays State Tigers drove 80 yards on nine plays and scored on their first possession into a stiff south wind to set the tone and go on for a 29-14 win Saturday over Missouri Southern.
Edward Smith’s two-yard TD run pu the Tigers up 7-0 less than three minutes into the game. Fort Hays pushed the lead to 10-0 on a nine-yard Cornelius Gallon. Gallon would finish with nine catches for 96 yards.
The Tigers made it 17-0 at the half on a 27-yard field goal with 3:33 to play in the second quarter.
An eight-yard TD catch from tight end Chase Leake made it 24-0 early in the third quarter. Tyler Kimbrough booted a 34-yard field goal with 0:21 to play in the third to make it 27-0.
Southern’s first touchdown came on a one-yard run from fullback Anthony Westfield early in the fourth quarter. Westfield would get another one-yard score late. The Tigers final points came on a safety.
The Tigers finish with 302 yards of offense, 152 on the ground and 150 through the air. Andre Smith led the running game with 94 yards on 17 carries. Edward Smith rushed for 82 yards on 12 carries. Quarterback Anthony Sheppard completed 15-of-20 passes for 150 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions.
Fort Hays State improves to 4-6 and 3-5 in the MIAA.
