WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — A 23-year-old Wichita man is scheduled to be sentenced next month after being convicted in the death of a woman during a traffic crash.
The Wichita Eagle reports that Javier S. Rizo Jr., was convicted of seven counts, including unintentional but reckless murder, aggravated battery and fleeing or attempting to elude police. Sedgwick County court records show a bench trial was held Thursday.
Rizo was charged in the Oct. 27 death of Maria Martinez. Prosecutors say she was in a vehicle that was hit by a van driven by Rizo while he was fleeing from police. Investigators say the van ran a stop sign before hitting Martinez’s vehicle.
Rizo is scheduled for sentencing on Sept. 5.
