Kids from the school-age program at the Hays Area Children’s Center are thanking the community for helping them raise more than twice the amount of donations they were aiming for in their second annual HACC Food Drive Challenge.

On Fridat afternoon, the children, with help from the Hays Police Department, loaded and delivered more than 1,000 items to Options, a domestic and sexual violence advocacy group serving northwest Kansas.

The original goal was to raise 400 non-perishable food items through July for the community service project.

Options Executive Director Sharon Leuenberger said the agency appreciates HACC, the children and families who made donations.

“The food will be distributed to those in need who use our services,” she said. “We are very thankful they thought of us.”

Leuenberger also thanked the HPD officers, who not only donated items, but also helped with the delivery.
