WAKEENEY — WaKeeney city police will soon be wearing new bulletproof vests following the purchase approval by the WaKeeney City Council during its July 15 meeting. Half of the money will come from the Local Drug Forfeiture fund.
Police Chief Terry Eberle told commissioners he hopes to soon purchase new video cameras for patrol vehicles and digital audio recorders to be worn by officers.
Council members also set Tuesday, Aug. 19, as the public hearing for the 2015 city budget.

RECORD OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE GOVERNING BODY 15 JULY 2014
The Governing Body of the City of WaKeeney, Kansas met in a regular session at City Hall 408 Russell Ave at 7:00 PM with the Mayor presiding and the following members present:
Mayor Kenneth Roy and Council Members Mary Jo Clevenger, Irene Dirks, Troy Leiker, Lynelle Shubert, and Allen Weigel
BEING ABSENT: None
The minutes of the previous meeting were approved as written, printed and distributed.
GUESTS: Terry Eberle, Charlie Knoll, and Janelle Miller
CHIEF OF POLICE: Terry Eberle provided his monthly departmental report. Chief Eberle reported a patrol vehicle was recently involved in an accident. Damage is estimated at $2,200 and a claim will be submitted to the city’s insurance carrier.
A quote from Bassinger Police Supply for six bullet proof vests was presented to the City Council. Three vests will be provided to regular full-time officers and three will be provided to reserve officers. After a discussion, Lynelle Shubert motioned to approve the purchase in the amount of $3,600.00 with half being paid from the Local Drug Forfeiture fund. Troy Leiker seconded. Motion carried.
Chief Eberle also discussed future departmental purchases including new video cameras for the patrol vehicles and digital audio recorders that each officer could carry on their uniforms.
CITY ADMINISTRATOR: City Administrator Hardy Howard presented a building permit for a standalone garage in a residential zoned area for Gary Dietz at 105 S. 10th Street. After a short review of the permit application, Allen Weigel motioned to approve the permit and variance to the zoning regulations. Irene Dirks seconded. Motion carried.
The City Administrator presented an annexation agreement for Bosselman Energy, Inc as drafted by the city attorney. After a discussion, Irene Dirks motioned to approve the agreement as written. Mary Jo Clevenger seconded. Motion carried. The agreement will be forwarded to the appropriate parties for signatures and then filed with the Trego County Register of Deeds.
The Governing Body reviewed minor changes to the draft 2015 city budget. The public hearing on the budget will be held August 19, 2015 at 7:00 PM.
It was the consensus of the City Council, as recommended by the City Administrator, to make an offer of employment to Devon Ghumm for the current full time opening in the Public Works Department.
The Governing Body discussed parking along the access road leading into the Triplett 24/7 truck stop.
