Following what many Hays USD 489 school board members, staff  and the community have called a tough year due to budget and staff cuts, Superintendent Dean Katt has come up with a new theme for the district to symbolize a new school year and a new start — “Building on the Best.”

Katt revealed the theme at Monday’s school board work session and said, while he had been thinking of a theme for a while, the idea hit him Sunday night while talking on the phone with his son.

Katt said he thinks the theme fits USD 489 nicely.

“It builds on what we have done in the past, which is very very good, no doubt about it, a great district, and focuses on what we need to change and that process and continuing to build on the best,” he said.

District Director of Curriculum Shanna Dinkel said the theme is the first one USD 489 has adopted.
