At Thursday’s Hays City Commission meeting, the prohibition of open-carry firearms in city buildings will be considered.
City staff is recommending the commission approve the prohibition of open-carry firearms in 12 city-owned buildings. The action was made possible by House Bill 2578.
The bill was approved in the 2014 legislative session.
Staff researched how other communities are handling firearms and found communities including Salina, Emporia, Junction City and Manhattan have prohibited firearms, while Dodge City and Derby allow both concealed and open-carry firearms. Ellis County already has banned open carry in county-owned building.
