Good Samaritans report hitchhiker stole from them

SALINA — A Salina couple wanting to do a good deed, wound up victims of a theft.

Lt. Gerald Shaft with the Salina Police Department said a 62-year-old Salina man and his wife were homeward bound from Wichita Monday afternoon when they and picked up a Hispanic male hitchhiker along Interstate 135 near Park City.

The couple drove the hitchhiker to Salina, took him to a restaurant for a meal, then to their home for a shower. They gave him clean clothes, and let him sleep on their couch.

The homeowner, who was holding a .44 caliber black powder cap-and-ball pistol, fell asleep in the same room where the man was sleeping. When the homeowner woke up, he found the man and the pistol gone.

The value of the pistol is placed at $600.
