On Friday, a Fort Hays State University student approached university student services “in distress” as a victim of an alleged sexual assault.

University officials did not disclose details of the incident, however, the student is not believed to have reported the incident to the Hays Police Department or FHSU Police Department.

Following the report, the Office of Student Affairs sent an email to parents urging them to remind their sons/daughters to be smart, stay in groups and watch out for one another. An email was also sent to students reminding them of signs of sexual assault and resources that can be sought if they were to become a victim. The university also requested increased surveillance as a precaution from both campus and HPD throughout this past weekend.

“Both the campus and Hays Police Department were fabulous about stepping up patrol because of the situation,” said Tisa Mason, vice president of Student Affairs.

According to Mason, the university believes the incident happened off campus, and there is no active police investigation.
