Plainville defeats Stanton County 6-0

District 6 will be well represented at Sub-State next weekend in Class 2-1A as both Plainville and LaCrosse picked up wins Friday night on the road. The Cardinals traveled to Johnson City Friday and pulled out a 6-0 victory against Stanton County.

After rolling Sacred Heart 52-21 in the first round of the playoffs, the Plainville football team had a much tougher task in the second round against the Trojans.

The Cardinals (10-1) put together a 14-play drive to start the game and moved the ball inside the Stanton County 10-yard line before senior Kyle Becker through an interception at the 5-yard line.

Plainville would force a 3-and-out defensively and the get the ball back at the Trojan 44-yard line on their second drive. This time the Cardinals would get the score they were looking for on a 1-yard run by Becker. With Harrison Gilliland out of the game due to an injury from last week, Becker carried the ball a lot more with 15 carries for 54 yards. Plainville would be unsuccessful on the two-point conversion.

Stanton County (9-2) nearly put something together at the end of the first half but ran out of time to finish their drive.

With neither team able to get the offense going in the second half either, the Trojans finally broke through with some success early in the 4th quarter. Stanton County got it down to the Plainville 1-yard line but on 4th-and-goal, junior Quinn Kendrick was denied by the Cardinal defense on a quarterback sneak.

Plainville tacked on their second shutout win of the season against a Stanton County team that was averaging 47 points per game. (3rd best scoring offense in 2-1A)

Plainville’s Trevor Axelson finished with 11 carries for 42 yards, and Dalton Werner ended with nine carries for 40 yards.

Plainville, enjoying their first winning season in 17 years, will host the Sub-State game next week against LaCrosse. The 11-0 Leopards knocked off the defending state champ Meade 21-12 on Friday. The game Friday night in Plainville will be a rematch of the last week of the regular season where the Leopards defeated the Cardinals 14-8 in LaCrosse.
