The Fort Hays State defense held Pittsburg State to 80 yards rushing and two field goals and upset the No. 8 Gorillas 7-6 Saturday afternoon in front of 11,489 at Carnie Smith Stadium in Pittsburg. It’s the Tigers first win over the Gorillas since 1978 and their first in Pittsburg since 1976.
The Tigers score the only touchdown of the game on their first possession. De’Vante Bausby intercepted a Treveon Albert pass near the goal line but Ed Williams knocked it away and fell on it in the endzone.
The Gorillas tried to take the lead with just over three minutes to play, but Daniel Lindsey blocked Connor Frazell’s 55 yard attempt. PSU had one final shot but FHSU held them on downs to seal the win.
The Gorillas were held to just 240 yards (80 in the second half) and 13 first downs (4 in the second half).
FHSU generated just 141 yards off offense (74 rushing, 67 passing).
The victory inproves the Tigers to 3-1. PSU falls to 3-1.
