WASHINGTON (AP) — A federal agency’s staff that oversees planning for the nation’s capital is supporting architect Frank Gehry’s revised design for a memorial honoring President Dwight D. Eisenhower near the National Mall.

The National Capital Planning Commission staff is recommending the panel grant preliminary approval Thursday for the latest design.

Gehry revised his design in September for a memorial park. He removed two large, steel tapestries on the sides of the park and left one as a backdrop depicting the Kansas landscape of Eisenhower’s Midwestern roots. Statues would depict Eisenhower as president and war general.

In April, the planning commission rejected the previous design, citing the large scale and placement of columns holding the tapestries.

Winning approval from the planning commission would be a significant step for the long-delayed memorial project.
