Y102 GOTW: LaCrosse defeats Plainville

Defense reigned supreme once again in Friday night’s Sub-State Championship game from Plainville. The game featured a rematch of the district championship game between the Plainville Cardinals and the LaCrosse Leopards.

Plainville got the football to start the game and both teams were forced to punt on their first drive. Plainville got on the board first on their second drive of the game, scoring on a 14 play, 79 yards drive and took six minutes and fifty-one seconds that was capped off by a 35 yard Harrison Gilliland touchdown run.

LaCrosse didn’t get on the board until the six minute mark in the second quarter. The Leopards capped off a 5 play, 62 yard dive with a 15 yard touchdown run by Taylor Stull that made it 7-6 with 6:00 minutes remaining in the first half. At halftime LaCrosse led 7-6.

LaCrosse got the football to begin the second half and both teams were forced to punt on their first two drives of the second half and LaCrosse fumbled the ball on their third. On Plainville’s third drive Kip Keeley picked off Kyle Becker’s play and returned it to the Plainville 13 yard line. It took the Leopards just two plays to punch the ball in the end zone on a Taylor Stull nine yard touchdown run and they took a 13-6 lead. LaCrosse forced another interception and ended with a 13-6 win.

With the win the Leopards improved to 12-0 on the season and they will play Centralia next Saturday in Hays. The Cardinals season came to an end with a 10-2 record.
