FHSU Athletics
Fort Hays State’s Trey Page claimed an individual championship at 285 pounds while six wrestlers place in the Top 4 at the Bob Smith Open on Sunday, Dec. 7. Adam Ludwin, Bradley Little and Jon Inman took second at the event, while Garrett Jones and Cash Drylie were fourth.
As a team, the Tigers went 72-51 on the afternoon, picking up 17 falls – second most in the tournament behind Nebraska-Kearney (19). Additionally, FHSU had a tournament high four technical falls on the day, including three straight from Page.
Page’s first tech fall came by shutout, a 16-0 victory over Oscar Soto (NW Kansas Tech). From there, Page (285) posted another shutout, taking down Shawn Beeson of NE Oklahoma A&M, 15-0. His third and final tech fall of the day was another shutout (17-0) over Riley Fielder (Oklahoma City). In the semifinal, Page’s match with Tuli Laulu (Adams State) was a narrow 5-3 decision, but the senior heavyweight returned to his dominant ways in the finals, knocking off Ivan DeLeon (Nebraska-Kearney) by major decision, 13-3.
Ludwin’s day began with a bye in the first round before he picked up an 8-2 decision over CSU-Pueblo’s Gage Currier in the second round. In the quarterfinals, Ludwin (125) won by decision (6-4) over Quinton Harrison (Bethany), setting up a rematch of Friday night’s contest against Zach D’Amico (Central Oklahoma). Though he dropped the Friday contest, 2-1, Ludwin picked up a revenge victory over D’Amico to reach the finals, shutting the Bronchos’ 125-pounder out, 6-0. In the finals, however, Ludwin ran out of steam, dropping a 7-2 decision in overtime to Aaron LaFarge of Oklahoma City.
After a first round bye, Little (165) won by major decision (12-3) over NE Oklahoma A&M’s Danny Carrilla in the second round before taking down Jonathan Blackwell (Bethany), 8-3, in the quarterfinals. Little reached the finals with a pin in 6:24 over Colby CC’s Gavin Grater, but saw his run come to an end in the finals, falling to Zach Skates (Oklahoma City), 6-2.
Inman (184) looked unbeatable early, picking up two straight falls over Trevor Whitaker of Bethany (6:57) and Anthony Ball of CSU-Pueblo (4:43), before rolling through the quarterfinals with an 11-4 decision over UNK’s Zach Stodden. In the semifinals, Inman doubled up NE Oklahoma A&M’s Brock Warren, 12-6 to square off with Division I opponent Aaron Studebaker of Nebraska. Up early in the match, a late takedown by Studebaker ended Inman’s day in second place by 6-5 decision.
Garrett Jones and Cash Drylie each made the quarterfinals of their respective brackets, and after dropping to the consolation bracket, wrestled their ways back to the third place match. Once there, Jones fell by decision, 8-3, to Gerald Huff (Adams State) and Drylie dropped a 12-5 contest to Miguel Tovar (Oklahoma City).
The Tigers continue the tournament portion of its regular season schedule next weekend (Sunday, Dec. 14) at the Newman Invitational in Wichita, Kan. Last season, the Tigers won the team title despite any individual championships, though nine Tigers made the championship matches.
