Due to a cold-weather mass coming in from Canada, a high of only 8 is expected Tuesday and with a wind chill factor down to 20 below.

Meteorologist Kelly Sudgen from the National Weather Service in Dodge City said Ellis County can expect another repeat Wednesday morning, with a windchill factor of negative 19 in the morning.

Sudgen called the occurrence a “cold anomaly.”

“It is a very cold air mass and it below average,” he said. “Average high for Hays is 40 degrees this time of year so when you are only getting to 8 degrees, you can see  how that is strange.”

Sudgen advised bundling up and wearing plenty of layers to avoid frostbite and emphasized it only takes a person anywhere between 30 and 50 minutes in -20 temperatures to develop hypothermia.

Sudgen also stressed keeping animals inside and out of the cold.
